So you meet someone who thinks knives are terrible scary weapony thingys. You show them that they are really just pretty and refined cutting instruments which is more or less what cavemen called "sharp thing that cut food" that has turned into quite a popular hobby. They realize how ridiculous their take was and start getting into knives themselves.

And then they really get into it, and decide it is time to spend some dollars!

...

So they come to you and tell you that they want to put together a collection of 5-10 folding knives. Here's the catch: the knives they want to purchase are ones that can fit any or all of the following criteria:
  • Significant effect on the development of the entire industry & what folding knives today are
  • Significant improvements upon the previous generation of common folders
  • Operating/functional characteristics which improves the ease of operation/ease of usage/increases effectiveness & efficiency
  • Excellence in overall quality
  • Notable interesting/high-performing steels
  • Notable, useful, cool & unusual materials
  • Other history surrounding the brand/model
  • Value that stands out from other models in it's tier/level/type/style/etc. (**while price is not the limiting factor, saving money & good values are always a plus)
  • Any other notable reason which gives the knife characteristics which makes it stand out from the crowd

So now you get to choose 5-10 folding knives that you would say really stand out as knives of meaningful significance to the industry and to the hobby: knives that can summarize a story of evolutionary development, knives that set standards of quality, and knives that have played a role in getting us to where we are today. So what would you choose?...and just importantly, why?
