any opinions of this folder would be much appreciated !

I don't have this one, but I think if you use it to defense yourself, it doesn't have a comfortable handle.

I have both the 5.11 Scout and the Alpha Scout. Either one would be an excellent EDC blade. I don't know about self-defense. They're both menacing looking, quick enough to deploy and have sharp strong blades. But I'd surely pick the Scout over the Alpha for the extra blade length (assuming a baseball bat was out of reach).

It looks no more or less effective for SD as any other folding knife. Or grocery store steak knife. Or screwdriver. Or broken bottle. Though it does has writing on the blade, which does make it better for self-defense.

For edc, one can do way better for the price. The handle shape is silly at best, and it appears to be a hollow saber grind, which, in my opinion, is less than ideal for the kind of "general, all around" tasks an EDC is asked to do.

I'd suggest something with a full flat grind that actually cuts things as an EDC knife (Opinel, SAK, etc) and let situational awareness and running away be your self-defense tools.

Or just get a Delica or Griptilian. Those are always good choices.

Point of disagreement: although the handle looks funny, the Scout has just about the most comfortable handle of any knife I own, bar none. The Alpha a little less so. Now I have quite small hands, so the folks who think the handle is uncomfortable might have larger hands that the handle doesn't suit as well.

Also, I should have mentioned that the liner seems disproportionately small for the size of the blade on the Scout. That has no effect on the EDC uses of either version but might affect your view for self-defense purposes. I guess.
