Anybody own one of these? I really like the shape, but I've never even seen one, let alone handle it. G-10, Aus 8, 4 position Spydie spoon style clip, as ambidextrous as a liner lock can be... Seems to tick the right boxes.

Any thoughts or comments? I may just pull the trigger and find out.

I work in LE, and as a result of using their stuff on the street I have learned to avoid all things 5.11

Some of their stuff years ago was top notch, but 5.11 puts their name on all kinds of pure junk these days.

Their gloves suck, their boots self destruct in months, and their duty gear is garbage, I can't imagine their knives are any better.

That being said I have never handled that particular knife.

I'm in the same boat, but being new to the knife game (5.11, not me) I was hoping they outsourced the manufacture of these to someone reputable.

The only 5.11 knife I had was a liner lock that failed about half the time I applied pressure to the spine while holding it in my hand. I won't take a 5.11 knife if I find a free one on the floor.

I agree about those 511 knives they are junk. I disagree on the boots these are going on 3 years of Chicago winters.

Yeah, I wouldn't buy their knives. But I do love their shorts, pants, and shirts.

My bother-in-law is a Federal Agent for the US Forestry Service. He swears by 5.11 and since he is in the woods, he is pretty abusive to his gear. I have a Covert 18 and it has held up well....But I will say that I sway more towards Maxpedition.

My 5.11 rush moab 10 backpack has held up awesome in the year Ive owned it. A quick wipe down and it looks new. My tac light pro pants are great:thumbup:

I've handled but not used their knives, if the price is right and it appeals to you; go for it

Ok, so it turns out a local outdoors shop carries these things so I went and had a look.

For a "tactical" knife it might work fine. I don't need a tactical knife though. There's a lot wrong with it as an EDC blade.

The Good:
It's built pretty solid.
The blade's really thick as are the scales.
G10 has a decent texture to it, about like a skyline.
Liners are recessed into the scales to save width.
Jimping, choils and thumb ramp make for good grip and controllability.
Spydie-esque thumb hole works as intended.

The Bad:
Despite the recessed liners it's still quite thick.
I'd think a "tactical" knife would have grippier handles.
The pivot on the one I handled was gritty.
The grind is really shallow. That combined with the thick blade should make for pretty terrible slicing ability.
I've seen BudK crap that was sharper. (This can always be fixed of course.)
Blade was just a tad off center.
Lockup came at about 70%.

If your idea of the perfect knife is a Strider, but you make minimum wage this may be the knife for you. Not by any means a bad knife, but I won't be buying one. Plus the local store had it listed at $79.95. Lol.

You'd be better off with a RAT folder.

The knife says Blade tech on it. If you are really interested in the quality search a little for blade tech knives. I would guess that knife was really made in the plant spyderco uses to make the byrd knives.

I have carried a 511 backpack for 5 years every day and it is rock solid. I like their shirts, love their shorts and buy a bunch of their stuff. Not everything the put there brand on is high quality but most is good stuff.

I have owned blade tech knives and keep one in my toolbox in the garage. I personally am not at impressed by blade tech knives but I have some of their kydex and it is good stuff as far as mass produced kydex goes.

The knives are junk. The boots were OK, I went through a pair a year in patrol. Clothing was good quality and I LOVE my MOAB 10.

Off topic!
My cousin has one of their flashlights and it seems pretty tough.
I'd never buy one though. I'm a Fenix guy.

Unfortunately I have one of these, don't ask me why but it was dirt cheap. I might add that a combination of a thick blade and shallow grind paired with a relatively light handle makes for a strange feeling in hand. The knife is very blade heavy and unbalanced. The detent is also too weak for such a heavy blade so if you shake the knive the blade comes out. Makes for a hell of a gravity knife though! :) All in all I would recommend a RAT1 instead.

My pops has that knife. Its a solid piece. At least his. Not my cup of tea at all, but I think its well built. Then again, his hasn't seen much use over the spydies I gave him. Check out the Byrd lineup.

Oh, and yup, great boots.
