5.11 & Strider

I think the ZT 0600 uses it.

Indeed, there was also a run of the HTM Snap in it as well. I would like to see what it's capable of in something with slightly better edge geometry than the 0600. Not that the SMF is a slicer by any means. Kind of hard to be excited about these though when TNK just released their S110V SMF's a few days ago. But considering those will be gone extremely quickly, these do have their appeal.

Not to sound like a jerk, but "Meh".

Seeing that water jetted sheet really makes me disappointed too. That's a lot of money for a knife that is made completely by machine.

Because the method of removing metal matters oh so much, doesn't it? I suggest you price some custom knives if you want a reality check as to how much an actual hand made knife costs.

Hint: Double the price, and knock about 80% of the knife to knife consistency.

I own some customs, which is the reason I have less appreciation for machine made knives that cost almost just as much. :)

A guy hand forging and/or processing via stock removal should be more expensive in comparison to the minutes it takes a water jetted blade to be processed.

That is just my opinion though.

So you completely discount the skills necessary to operate said machines which includes creating the original design, CAD drawings, generating code, testing, development, and designing a production procedure to make a product easily reproducible even though this effort is several times that put into smashing hot metal with a hammer. Cavemen figured that out. How hard could it be?

Hyperbole, of course, but an equivalent level of dismissal that illustrates just how little most people know about the realities of creating products with machinery. It isn't "insert material, press button" until a few hundred hours of work has already happened.

A guy hand forging and/or processing via stock removal should be more expensive in comparison to the minutes it takes a water jetted blade to be processed.

Should it? Why is one method of stock removal superior to another? Why are you discounting the time it takes to waterjet and CNC a blade, which is FAR more time than anyone realizes? We're not talking about "push button dispense blade". We're talking about a multi-step process that can take hours or days and smaller companies like Strider aren't churning out thousands of blades at a time.

Ultimately all knifemaking is stock removal. Does it really matter if it's a shaky human hand holding the blank to a belt or if it's an unwavering robot arm scraping itself over a clamped piece? No, it really doesn't. The simple fact is that grinding blades and cutting scales is one of the least important bits of making a knife. The level of accuracy and quality you demand is what is important.

That is just my opinion though.

And opinions are like @$$h0l35... I am one. Or have one. Errr... we ALL have one. There we go. Got it eventually. :D

This is one of my favorite knife arguments, BTW. Nobody ever wins. You just drink more beer and keep going. :D

5.11 is having a great sale now. Just got one 25% off :)). Will let you know when arrives.

Why do these cost $100 more than a regular SMF

they mark it up because they offer coupon codes that you can apply towards it (25% off currently)... if I didn't have an SMF already, I'd have been in for one (even though I'm not a fan of having a brand name/logo on the handle)

comes with a tin (unlike the regular baggie), and limited run though with nice steel.

It was obvious what he meant by the "tumbling room", but the silly part of me wanted him to open that door and reveal a room full of circus gymnasts.
