Anyone used the 5.11 Tactical Vest as a WSS gear carry?
I'm looking for a way to have camera, GPS, SPOT, snacks, etc handy at the front so as not to have to take off the backpack to get 'em.
Other suggestions welcome.

Thx & Happy New Year.

A tactical vest is pretty versatile. I'd wear one if it didn't look so high-speed. The first tactical vest I was issued was mesh and pretty strong and plenty breathable.

OK, I actually looked at the 5.11 and yeah, I'd wear that one.

go one step further and get the Camelback Delta vest. Integrated water bladder on the back, full PALS webbing for adding pouches to fit your needs.

the camelbak delta vest looks like a nice but very tactical looking vest. especially with the webbing and what not.

the 5.11 tac vest should work for what your wanting to do, and is definetly affordable. i don't own one but i've tried one on a few times and loaded it up at the store to see what it would be like. the fact that it has snap loops inside to fix the vest to your belt is a real bonus in that things dont bounce around as much.

make sure to post pics of whatever ya get :D

I have never used one, but I am going by the cop shop to pick up a few things for work. Might have to check one out in person. I'll get back to ya.

Looks viable. Not sure about weight but it looks fairly light. Has the added benefit of exact customizations. If you go tactical at some point, or hunt, it would have some real added versatility. I'd pick one up but I just spent a bagillion dollars on gear and have to sit back until I enjoy/test it out before I buy more. I say pull the trigger and test it out.

if i am correct, then i would prefer a vest like this over a tactical military lbv in that i could wear this around the city without getting a second look.

I thought it was the kind I saw in the video Garrett Schmidt linked. The one in that video has some potential in my opinion. I'm not huge on tactical gear but I do see potential in some equipment for crossover application in survival or non-combat outdoors applications.

i see the same potential in tactical equipment in the woods as well.

however, it seems like he just wants something to keep things up front and handy when on a day hike. if i am correct, then i believe the 5.11 tactical vest that i pictured above would make a good choice.

I have the this one and it serves the purpose of carrying gear in a much lower profile than a web type. This one also has 2 rear side pockets that carry water bottles!

When I took my ecology class in the PNW, one of our profs carried all of his gear, included camera goodies, in this vest. He said it was much more comfortable and accessible than a pack.

I have had various Photog Vests over the years, Banana Republic, Rio Bravo, Royal Robbins/5.11 and now, Cabela's.

The 5.11 is heavy canvas and you're wearing two vests because there is a price to pay for all of the two hidden pocket pistol goodness with this thing. It is incredibly hot in the summer, even with the lighter khaki.

The Cabela's is very, very light and is wearing pretty good.

You put a hoodie with the 5.11 or polar fleece and it's really good for all but mind-numbing cold. Cabela's for the summer and/or warmer climes.
