5/16" over 1/4"

I'm bringing this up only because I'm thinking I should have spent the extra $100.00 and gotten the HO version of the black crinkle finish with Mag handles FSH that I just ordered. Just so I don't start kicking myself in the butt and start trying to sell off my new FSH so I can get the HO version, I would like to post the question: For those of you who own/handled 1/4" and 5/16" Busse's knives, what do you think the pro & cons of the two are? Differences ( yes, one is thicker than the other ) in use, handling, weight, etc.? Is there really that much difference? Cause looking on the ruler 5/16" is just ever so slightly bigger than 1/4". I'm trying to convince myself here that I made the right choice! And No.... buying the other HO (owning both) isn't really an option!

A little help... if you would. Thanks guys.

Yeah I know.... so much for No Regrets!

The 1/4 inch is just fine. All my SH's and BM's are 1/4 inch and the ones I used have never failed me. Cliff Stamp, brutalized the 1/4 inch BM he got, for years and it never failed on him. I don't think you need to worry about it at all. The fact that INFI is 58 Rc all the way to the spine means that the chances that you would be able to bend it without a cheater bar are none. For the money, you cannot beat the 1/4 inch. Stay with that one for now.

I've had both, and 5/16" may be ever so slightly more than a 1/4" on a ruler, but the HO knife is a lot thicker.

This may sound strange, but the HO actually feels lighter to me. It must not be, but I think maybe the balance point is different. I'm not sure. I only have the HO left, so I can't compare them anymore, but the thicker one didn't feel any heavier to me. I'm wondering if it's because the whole handle is thicker, and on the blade it only gets thicker near the spine, so the balance is less blade heavy, because the handle adds so much more steel. I'm guessing.

The HO I have is the Limited Edition, and I haven't been able to bring myself to use it yet, so I was thinking of getting another one, and I haven't yet been able to decide which thickness I'd want. I think you made a good choice. Wait until it comes in the mail, and see what you think. Don't use it until you're sure. Talk to skunk if you feel you made a mistake when it comes in the mail. Or, I don't think you'd have any problem selling it later.

NO!!!! You did right. Trust me. Speaking as the owner of a HO FSH, let me say this: Yes, it's cool (actually OUTRAGIOUS is a better word). Yes, It's overkill in toughness. But I had to ask myself, do I honestly think I'm going to carry something this frickin' (Napoleon Dynamite code for foul, horrible word) heavy through the woods on anything longer than a trip through my backyard? And the answer is NO. Honestly, it would slap the crap out of your leg just hiking with it hanging from your belt. You're much more appropriately equipped with a 1/4" stock FSH for hiking, camping, and wilderness excursions. However, I am not saying the HO FSH is worthless. Jerry mentioned making some for rescue people going into flood-ravaged New Orleans and IMO the 5/16" stock FSH would be perfect for that application, where they may need a knife one minute, and an impromptu crowbar the next. (And maybe as a boat anchor too?) Anyway, I can see the heavy ordnance FSH more than making up for its weight in usefulness in a situation like that, but you're not going to bend that 1/4" stock FSH any time soon with typical camp chores, and you'll be glad you didn't go any thicker after a good 20 mile hike with it on your belt.

I agree with X-Head. The 1/4" version is tougher that anything you will ever put it through.

In my humble estimation the HOG FSH is more for super end of the world type stuff. But I would bet that the regular version would hold up just as well.

That being said.....I am 6' tall and weigh 315 pounds and can bench 330 pounds.......ya.. I need a HOG FSH....... just cause I can!!! :D

My scale says FSH weights 28 oz, this is as much as ergo BM. I don't own HOFSH so I can't compare the both but I bet it's heavier. Can't imagine carrying Fusion Battle Mistress, she will pull my pants down :D

Thanks fellow Hogs for all the great replies!

Got my FSH yesterday. This knife is flippin huge. Biggest & Badest fixed blade I own. Can't imagine something bigger. Well if I close my eyes and dream I can! I'll get me one of those HOs, someday. Even if it means tempting someone with a fist full of cash to get one! Going to start saving the pennies today! Or... maybe after I get my next Meaner Street!

Hope to post some pics tonight or tomorrow. The big smile in the pic will be me!

Hey, I just got the regular one and the best way for me to describe the difference in thickness is that the HO is equivalent to the Standard SH plus a Benchmade full size folding knife blade.

The new SH is right at 0.22 inches Thick. The HO is 0.33 inches thick or about 0.11 inches thicker which is about the thickness of a benchmade blade. The Crinkle finish makes it look thicker, but it is not.

However, I can bend with my bare hands most knives this thick a few degrees, because of their differential temper. I cannot bend this Busse at all with my bare hands.
