Joe,

What's the problem with the "Quality Control" Department over at Buck Knives?.

.

I just received a "Small" Intrepid that I traded for [with another "Forumite"...this Buck is "NIB"] and have noticed that the blade edge is ground somewhat "un-even", (especially at the "corner" of the Tanto blade), and the blade isn't all that SHARP. Also, the top sharpened edge-line is WAY OFF ("wavey"), and one side is deeper (wider) than the other. (I wish I had a Digital camera or a "scanner"...).

I don't want to go through the TROUBLE (time and money) of sending this knife back to Buck for re-grinding or replacement, but I just want you to know that I am NOT a "happy camper" with THIS Buck Knife!

(Now, my LARGE Buck Intrepid II...That one is PERFECT!!

So, how did THIS "small" Intrepid slip past "Quality Control"???

(PLEASE e-mail me if you don't care to respond to me here on the forum.).

Dann,
I am first of all frustrated that we did not hit the mark with your knife and i do know that it can be a hassle to send it in. You should not have been put in this situation. I know that grinding that particular configuration is quite dificult from a production standpoint and it is something we fight with internally all the time. I will investigate to make sure that what is going out the shipping doors is up to par. I hope you don't mind if i copy your letter and post it in the hallway. We have a bulletin board with the heading " What our customers are saying about us". We use it to post the good the bad and the ugly comments we get. Our employees care and this is an excellent way for them to know what needs to be done to meet our customer's expectations.
If you ever do get the chance to send it in we will, of course, make it right.

Sincerely,

Joe,

Thank-You for your quick reply.

Yes, you do have my permission to copy and post this letter.

I would send this knife back to Buck, but then I might just run into the same "problems" with a replacement knife, and also I don't want to be without this knife for as long as it would probably take to receive a replacement, (and pay for shipping this defective knife).

I guess I'll just "take my lumps", even if those lumps are expensive.

(Unless you would like to send me a free REPLACEMENT 0187-TA-0 Intrepid to help ease my pain...).

Sometimes in internet knife trading I've gotten knives that weren't defective, but had some minor problems that were not disclosed. Usually it is an uneven grind, especially at the tip. I take my lumps for "sight unseen" trading. I will also point out that these have been minor problems unlike glockman99's intrepid. But if you get a really good trade on something, be wary of this.

I like Joe's response and think that Buck "steps up to the plate" alot more readily than other manufacturers.

kevinb17,

The problems with this Buck Intrepid aren't real MAJOR (but they ARE enough to UPSET ME), and even though this was a "private party" trade, the knife was "NEW In The Box".

I just expected a HIGHER QUALITY product from Buck Knives.

Dann,

Why don't you box up the knife and send it to my attention and i will turn it around quickly with your postage reimbursed. I would hate to think that every time you took that knife out and you saw the grind it would give you a bad feeling about us. I would much rather that when you take it out of the box the birds start singing and the sun comes out and you get a big happy grin!

Let me make it right.

Joe, I may just do that on Monday...(But I don't know right now...I'm so depressed...

Also, the handles (scales?) didn't "mate-with" the tang all that well either, but I "fixed" that myself. (I also went ahead and rounded [finished] both ends of the handles, where they were left thick and sharp, so I'll just send you (Buck) the steel, and keep the handles so they don't get "lost" or replaced...).

PS, PLEASE e-mail me with the address to send the Intrepid to.

Joe,

I've given this ALOT of thought. I'm just going to keep the Buck Intrepid "as-is", as a reminder that not everything is perfect.

Heck, if I REALLY get bored, I may just try to "fix" it myself...

(It sure IS DULL, 'tho, and I don't really have a good tool to sharpen it with...Do you have any suggestions on what to buy to help put a GOOD edge on this knife?).

Dann,

There are a lot of good gadgets out there that help with sharpening. I still need "training wheels" for my stones so i use a Lansky. Probably the most impotant thig to remember about that type of sharpener is to disregard the fixed settings. Just find the one that matches the angle on your knife and use it.

Take care,
