Hi every one,
Its my first post here.

I am looking for a suvival knife (5, 6 or 7 in long).

Here's what i plan to do with it:

Day hike
Backpacking
Car camping
a bit of bushcrafting

I am looking for a hight value item.

Thx

When I was in the market for a Randall I was gonna get a 7"+ incher then realized I dont have any 7" knives cause I only use my 5-5.5 inchers for camping/hiking/bushcraft etc. So I ended up getting the 5.5" model.

To make a long story short, I think blades around 5 inches are best. For the record I also carry a hatchet whenever Im in the woods.

+1. Based on your task list, 5 inches will work great for you.

WELCOME !

I love knives but I hate carrying extra weight if I don't need to:

Day hike: 1 inch blade ( to open your packets of M&M's)

Backpacking : 1 inch blade ( to open your packets of M&M's) + bigger knife for the drop bears & Tassy Devils & impresses the ladies

Car camping : 1 inch blade + can opener ( to open your packets of M&M's plus beans)... or bring your 24" Bowie to open a can of beans like I once saw some dude do... he laughed at me when I used a US army issue itty bitty can opener gadget to do the exact same thing...but faster :D

a bit of bushcrafting : 7 to 9 inch blade to chop branches... or heck I just bring my K-Bar Khukri..... YMMV:thumbup:

To answer your question- look at K-Bar becker magnum camp knife BK5... awesome... might be bigger than 7"

I'd suggest you look at the ESEE-6. It's a basic, well designed, well manufactured, fixed blade from a good company.

The blade is ~6.5 inches.

High value knife, I can think of 3 off the top of my head,

#1 - Becker BK2 - under $60
#2 - USMC Kabar (the original with the leather handle) under $50
#3 - Cold Steel SRK under $70

These three are very high value and capable outdoors knives.

Good luck

High value 5" knife, thy name is Becker BK2.

You want one.

When someone says value and user, I can't help but say ESEE. They just simply work well.

I say SAR 5 by Busse....the only blade you'll ever need.

My other two choices would be SFNO by Busse or Falkniven Custom Micarta F1

My general purpose knives are either;

ML Kephart, or

Scrapyard scrapper 5.

Lots of other good choices though.

If what you mean by "high value" is in the lower price realm, I don't think Busse et al is what you are looking for. You need to define high value.

Got to knivesshipfree.com. and get one of the Scagel medium hunters. 5.5" blazin sharp excellent knife.

I have carried everything from an 18" m-43 kukri on down. When actualy living outdoors constantly through all conditions for several years my constant companions and di it all tools were my Kukri and a 5" bladed knife. A blade over 5" long starts very quickly losing utility. I also stay away from choils as on the ESEE6 they get jung up on whatever your working with.

P-38? im still saddened i lost mine

im a big fan of Bark River knives so the Bravo sounds pretty good IMO

If you want high quality go custom. Check the makers for sale section or design your own and have a maker make it. I've owned knives from ESEE, Swamp Rat, and Bark River and although good, they don't hold a candle to my Koster or Koyote. Also, I'd suggest looking at even smaller knives. 3 and 1/2 inch blades are what I like at the moment.

Edited to add: Check out the Wilderness and Survival Forum.

Sticking with production knives only at this stage, plenty of time to get into customs later on:

4" - For survival Bravo1 by Bark River, or F1 by Fallkniven
4.5" - For Bushcraft Aurora by Bark River (my preferred option)

6" - Fallkniven A1

7" Cold Steel Recon Scout
