A local retired knife maker has some thick 440C.I seem to remember it being 1/2-5/8" thick.I was thinking about buying it to make some of the small Scagel style hatchet/skinner combos.Does anyone have any experience with getting some stainless this thick heat treated.

Thanks

That's pretty thick. Might want to have it done rather than trying it yourself although you'd probably do OK if you had a kiln of some sort and some SS foil. ALso a woodworker's vise to clamp the piece into once you pull it out of the fire. Heat up slowly to 1950F hold for an hour then immediatley clamp the package into the vise to rapidly suck the heat out and keep things flat. I've been doing 440C and S30v this way with great results although S30v only needs 20 minutes or so at temperature. If I remember correctly you can temper at 450 for two cycles of at least an hour each.

Thanks Peter!!! Do You suppose Paul Bos could do this? Also What do you guys suggest for the RC hardness to keep a lasting edge that wouldnt be to brittle to use as a pelvis splitter.
Thanks
Mark
