I am looking at 4 1/2" to 5" Randall made knifes for
occasional edc. Mainly around town (urban area's)
So a monster blade is not an option. (for me anyway)
So far a 5" #7 is in the in the lead. Also looking at
5"-#3, 5"-#5, 4.5"-#23.(Maybe even a 5" model #10?)
Will go Black Micarta & silver
on this one.
I know its all personal preference, but to those of you who carry
any of these in the 5" range, your thoughts are appreciated.

I dont know where you live but here in Denver the legal length of blade is 3 1/2". The knife I carry for EDC and for everyday use is a Randall #10-3" blade. I made a duplicat sheath to the one supplied by Randall, only without the belt loop. I carry this set up in my right front pocket. It is very comfortable and handy to get at. I think your list of options are all fine. When I started carrying, I quickly went through several bulky knives and now think the #10-3" is perfect for use. Concider the legality of blade length you can carry. If law enforcement should ask to see or see you using the knife, you could be embarassed unless of course you have a permit to carry a concealed weapon. More than likely you wont be detained, but you might never see your Randall again either. Personally I would rather have $15.00 knife confiscated than a $400 Randall. Another model that I have concidered is the Tri-athlete. I think its about $175.00 and about a 6 or 7 week wait. I could be wrong. Good luck and reasoning in you selection.

I dont plan to carry it concealed.
So I think I am OK.

MCM I don't know what your intentions are for use, but I carried/carry a model 8. I wore out a Johnson roughback sheath and replace it with a pouch style like one that comes with the model 26. I like it very much.

I have used the following in your size "range" too...........
model 23
model 25
model 5 5"
model 1 6"
model 15
model 7

All are good users but EDC the model 8 is my favorite. hope I helped some.

I had Sullivans make a neck sheath for me...it is comfortable, easy to access and all that....plus it is light.:)

Thanks Sam, After looking at the #8, I can see your point.
I was already going to ask when I placed my order for a pouch style
sheath! As far as intended use goes, just light duty. I am too hard on
knifes at work to carry this one.(would hate to abuse it)
Have you tried many diferent handle materials?
What do you recommend for a carry knife? Opposed to a show piece.

Thanks again!

MCM, I too use mine for work and it does get abused! It just shows character.;) There is a pic in the archives on knifeforums.com just use the search mode.

I perfer stag, it is not slippery. Most of my users are stag. It stays cool in the hot sun and is warm in the winter. Some say it is fragile but mine has held up better than the leather. I have had leather shrink and loosen up. I work in and around the water. [ stag is the only option on m 8 ] and I also like micarta, with leather a good second choice but not as nice looking imo. The model 8 is big enough for just about every thing I need plus it has the top sharp edge for scraping paint, rust, wood, barnacles, and anything I can think of. The good edge is for serious use, ie rope, clothes, seat belts, [sometimes my finger:D ] and fish of course.

Heck there are so many models to choose. I had the triathlete but sold it to a friend, a nice knife too. I took my model 26 to Switzerland and used it in the Alps on picnics. Get what YOU like and USE it. It will always have memories for you! Have fun and be safe!

Thanks for your input!
Stag with an alum butt just might do the trick!

Well, have decided on a #8 (thanks for the help)
Only thing left to decide is SS or Carbon?
Stag with silver hilt & Duralumin butt cap- black and silver washers,
Or black Micarta with black and brass washers
with brass butt cap? Got to get it right!
If I am gonna wait 3yrs, I don't want to screw up! LOL LOL
Still need to check if I can order it with a 26 cover sheath.

Thanks again! & keep the good advice coming!
