You know, I saw this a while back and it struck me that kids are going to try things, so they may as well try them with an adult's supervision.

I have been letting my 6 year old daughter do some things with my supervision that she will need to be able to do in life. This week I let her chop tomatoes with a sharp knife for the first time. I figured letting her use a dull knife was just teaching her how to use too much force and is just an accident waiting to happen. I showed her how to use a cutting board, how to slice so the knife does all the work and where she should keep her fingers to avoid a cut. Last week I showed her how to use kitchen matches to start a fire in the fireplace. She also sometimes steers the truck up the driveway on my lap. It's neat to see the fire in her eyes as she does "grown up stuff" even though she knows she needs a grownup's help for now.

One day she won't need me so much, that's OK I guess. She'll be ready!

One of the things I like about the lady I have recently started dating is that she sees nothing wrong with her seven year old son having a pocket knife. I think she might be a keeper.
