My wife an I just got back from a five day (~ 50 mile) backpacking trip in the Gila Wilderness. It's typically July before we can get in the backcountry here (Montana) and we wanted to do a trip and see some different country. While there were some similarities (particularly up high), there were definitely some differences
We started the trip at the Catwalk on Whitewater Creek- a mile of suspended trail- former site of a long abandoned mine, elevation is ~ 5000'
this is some the country headed out of the catwalk- lots of hardwoods, juniper, yucca, cactus, etc
we spent two days on the main Whitewater, there are over 50 stream crossings in fifteen miles! your going to get your boots wet, lighter/faster drying boots are the order of the day- we also used a product called Hydropel which apparently worked as we hiked two days straight w/ wet feet and no blisters for either of us
we headed up higher for a couple of days (changed to predominately pine/spruce/fir/aspen), this is at Spruce Creek Saddle
day time temps were in the upper 80's and 90's, we'd wake up to 30's and 40's
