My wife an I just got back from a five day (~ 50 mile) backpacking trip in the Gila Wilderness. It's typically July before we can get in the backcountry here (Montana) and we wanted to do a trip and see some different country. While there were some similarities (particularly up high), there were definitely some differences :)

We started the trip at the Catwalk on Whitewater Creek- a mile of suspended trail- former site of a long abandoned mine, elevation is ~ 5000'

this is some the country headed out of the catwalk- lots of hardwoods, juniper, yucca, cactus, etc

we spent two days on the main Whitewater, there are over 50 stream crossings in fifteen miles! your going to get your boots wet, lighter/faster drying boots are the order of the day- we also used a product called Hydropel which apparently worked as we hiked two days straight w/ wet feet and no blisters for either of us :)

we headed up higher for a couple of days (changed to predominately pine/spruce/fir/aspen), this is at Spruce Creek Saddle

day time temps were in the upper 80's and 90's, we'd wake up to 30's and 40's

little knife porn :D my custom handled (Greg Haugh, loneridergrips.com) WM1 was chief food prepper, fire starter and fish cleaner

the Gila is the real deal wilderness experience, there was virtually no trail maintenance- lots (lots!) of windfall, lots of trying to find the trail, very few signs or blazing- you want good maps/compass w/ a GPS to back that up

we made our way down to the very head end of the South Fork of the Whitewater- an amazing little creek (the brookies came out of the South Fork) that winds down from the high country through some amazing canyon country

Awesome trip and pics, just what the dr. ordered I bet with all that alone time and scenery! Thanks for the pics! That knife looked like it handled it all with ease on that trip. Did you have a back up to that blade or was that your main knife for the trip?

the backup was the wife's SAK classic- the little scissors were darn handy for cutting open up the MicroPur water tabs :)

great pics.. thanks for sharing... i can't wait till the misses and I can do some solo trips together...:)

Those are some really cool picks, looks like it was an awesome trip. How did you like the WM1 for neck carry?

Man, that is beautiful country, thanks for sharing! Greg Haugh does some wonderful work...I have an F1 and S1 he rehandled for me; the orange looks great on that WM-1!

very well- I had the length adjusted so the sternum strap came across just above where it ties into the sheath- to be honest you don't even know it's there (until you need it of course :D)

Brook trout pictured, I was catching similar sized rainbows in the main Whitewater

here's a pic of the brookies on my homemade 1 oz grill

fishing rig and "tackle box"- small plastic vial w/ six 1/32 oz panther martins and ten #10 plain hooks (backup if they weren't hitting spinners- which they were :D)

My sister went on a 28 day Outward Bound trip in the Gila. Changed her life.
She was 18 and it busted her down and built her up, as it was supposed too.
