Been a while since I've made any of these, and finally got around to finishing this one out. Been too busy making kitchen knives!!!!:D

Anyhoo, this is a 5" kwaiken in W2, fully distal tapered blade, tapered tang, ito wrap, and GORGEOUS curly Honduran mahogany under the wrap. I've got to do a bit of tweaking to the sheath, apply the final edge (I refuse to work on these sharp, as I value my fingers), and then I figure I'll sell it.

...which brings up an interesting point. EVERY single one of these that I've tried to make with the express intention to have it be MINE has sold. Now, perhaps I'm just being a weenie when someone insists that I sell it to them (which is, I'm sure, exactly what the problem is - ;)), but I haven't managed to carry one of these in almost two years. A good problem to have, I suppose, but here's why... Everyone that has held one of these can't get over how much lighter it is than other's they've handled. I go to great lengths to reduce mass where I know there's no advantage for it to be present. Despite the fact that the stock is almost .290" thick at the ricasso, the drastic tapering fore and aft, the high flat grind, the beveled spine... heck, even the slight hollow grind under the wood scales - if it doesn't need to be there, it's removed. With my ultrasuede lined kydex inside-the-waistband sheath, it simply disappears on you. I'm 6'2", and 170 pounds... i look like I'm made of pipecleaners, and I managed to conceal one of these under a shirt EVERY SINGLE DAY when I was working retail. You just don't notice it there, and nor does anyone else!

All right, sorry for the blabbing. I'm really just avoiding posting my photos, because I SUCK at capturing good shots of knives with hamon. I've just about given up, in fact. Instead, I'll just take quick videos that suck slightly less than the photos and post those!:D

Here ya go - as always, comments and criticism welcome.

That was different.

Stop bringing up old shit.

;):D

(If you haven't seen the movie 'Friday', this likely won't work - :D)

Hope you are well, my brother.

I looked it up :D

Wow, Matt. Gorgeous work. How much time did you spend just polishing and finishing that Honduran mahogany before covering half of it up with ito? Nevermind don't answer that

Hey D and M.....I dig it, but would LOOOOVE it with a proper tsuba/guard.....only critique.

Best Regards,

Brother Wulf - that ain't the hard part. Handles get finished out, then ito wrapped, on to everything soaked in resin, and then I have to painstaking wipe all of the resin off the wood without disturbing the wrap. I've left it on in the past, and although it turns out pretty nicely, I think the aesthetic of bare wood is nicer. SERIOUS pain in the butt, though!!

Sooner or later I'll owe it to you to do that, bud. Let's see where the Fates take things...

Very nice

So how much does it weigh?

Looks really nice Mathew.
I like that you cleaned up the epoxy on the wood (it's a pain I know), much cleaner looking that way I think.

That's a beauty Matt - love the wrapped wood handles on these. Definitely need to get you to do up one of those sheaths you describe for the smaller one of my pair.

very cool
Looks like you lined up the stripes of curl inside the wrapped diamonds.

Thanks, Mark! I mostly managed to get them centered... there's only so much leeway you have when wrapping on a taper like this...

This knife really shines for the style it is made in. Tapers and curves in all the right places.
