5 pound Propane tank forge

I have an old 5 LB propane tank, that I am thinking about using to make a forge. It's maybe 10" in diameter and 12" high. Any thoughts on burner number/ size? Buy or make? I am thinking of lining with kaowool lined with some type of refractory to seal it, and bricks on the floor. ( i have K23 bricks, use that, or use a hard firebrick?) Thanks for the advice in advance.

That a lot bigger than a 5 pound tank (I think you meant a 5 gallon tank), but it will make a good forge. You will need to put 2" of insulation inside it, which will give a roomy 5-6" chamber when done.

I wouldn't bother with bricks on the floor. Just put some extra refractory in to make the floor after the lining has been cured and fired. The best choice for a floor is Bubble Alumina or Cast-o-lite 30.

If you are still coming up to Ashokan, I will bring you a container with plenty of Cast-o-lite 30 for the floor. If you come down this way, I will give you as many full bags as you want.

Same offer to anyone wanting some bag of this great castable refractory. It sells for $65+ a bag.

Thanks for the offer Stacy. I am planning on going. The wife says it will "be good for me to talk knives with people who are interested in knives". I will let you know when I'm registered. And I will take you up on that very generous offer.

Send me an email to remind me to stick a gallon jug of it in the car. You should also take advantage of your next job down this way to get a couple bags of Cast-o-lite. There are so many things you can do with it. A friend that I gave four bags to cast big flat blocks in old baking pans and uses them for placing red hot things down, and welding.
