5 Quick Thoughts on the Boom PaRang

I got a boom parang today, and here are five immediate reactions:

1. I thought it'd be bigger. Not sayin' it's too small, but I thought it'd be a bit bigger. I think I saw it as a machete-sized blade.

2. Given the curvature of the knife and the revolver-style grip that naturally pushes your hand toward the sans-choil blade, it begs for a D-guard, which I shall promplty add.

3. While the balance of the knife favors the blade, it's not as blade-heavy as I expected. So, I'm curious if it will be the chopper I had envisioned.

4. I compared it to a Battle Saw, and it feels much lighter and more user-friendly. The battle saw is cool, don't get me wrong, but in terms of utility on all fronts -- camping, backpacking, chopping, hunting, bushcraft etc. -- I think the boom parang is a blade that wouldn't tire out your arm or rip up your pinky the way the straight-handled battle saw might. Plus, since it's lighter, it's easier to carry. On a side note, I like to use my blades, so I tend to value their overall usefuleness over their asethetic or badass-ness value.

5. I once sold a ZTBM and deeply regreted doing so. I think that was back in 2006ish (before I joined BF). Anyways, this reminds me of that lovely blade. I'm glad I got one. Now, the question is -- do I go leather or kydex for the sheath?

My thoughts...

Well, with an 11" blade at 0.187 thick, it's too thick for a typical machete. These specs lean , I hope, more towards an all-rounder, that will work better on the heavier North American vegetation and woods

2. Given the curvature of the knife and the revolver-style grip that naturally pushes your hand toward the sans-choil blade, it begs for a D-guard, which I shall promplty add.

hmmm, may have to try that ... never liked them before...

3. While the balance of the knife favors the blade, it's not as blade-heavy as I expected. So, I'm curious if it will be the chopper I had envisioned.

chopper/slasher/all-rounder, I hope...

Sounds good.

Personal preference, of course, but on a baldric.

Mine comes Monday and I won't get home from work until about 7. Can't wait! Thank's for the preview. Sounds exactly what I was hoping for.

...

1. The size is pretty spot on what I expected, but from when they were first announced I've thought there's room to make an XL one; 0.22" stock, and a modestly taller, wider, longer blade. Satin... dare I say INFI? :D

2. Don't plan to use any cord on it at first. If I do, D-Guard might be the ticket, but I'm also interested in the middle tube lanyard thing I've seen around here somewhere.

3. So many nice grips. Choke back for power chopper, choke up for a light, neutral feel right up on the edge. The grind on mine is spot on, ready to go. It should be fast and penetrate well, but I only banged around with it for a few minutes so far.

4. Yep, don't have a Battlesaw specifically, but I can see all that. I actually wasn't sold on this one immediately, so I owe a couple of guys back in January who were so enthusiatic on it in the thread that I caved. So glad I did.

5. I'll probably get kydex, hopefully we'll see some offered soon.

Nice short review! I got mine yesterday and I agree with most of what you wrote. I like the way it balances and think it will be a great heavy camp knife. Can't wait to get in the woods and clear trails for hunting season.
