I got a boom parang today, and here are five immediate reactions:
1. I thought it'd be bigger. Not sayin' it's too small, but I thought it'd be a bit bigger. I think I saw it as a machete-sized blade.
2. Given the curvature of the knife and the revolver-style grip that naturally pushes your hand toward the sans-choil blade, it begs for a D-guard, which I shall promplty add.
3. While the balance of the knife favors the blade, it's not as blade-heavy as I expected. So, I'm curious if it will be the chopper I had envisioned.
4. I compared it to a Battle Saw, and it feels much lighter and more user-friendly. The battle saw is cool, don't get me wrong, but in terms of utility on all fronts -- camping, backpacking, chopping, hunting, bushcraft etc. -- I think the boom parang is a blade that wouldn't tire out your arm or rip up your pinky the way the straight-handled battle saw might. Plus, since it's lighter, it's easier to carry. On a side note, I like to use my blades, so I tend to value their overall usefuleness over their asethetic or badass-ness value.
5. I once sold a ZTBM and deeply regreted doing so. I think that was back in 2006ish (before I joined BF). Anyways, this reminds me of that lovely blade. I'm glad I got one. Now, the question is -- do I go leather or kydex for the sheath?
