Just ordered this book. Anyone read it? Is it good or did i just waste $20?

I've read it and still like to read it and still enjoy reading it. It's one of the best knifemaking books that I have read and is most definatly worth $20.

I'm sorry for not being clear in my first reply.

totally worth it. should be on the knifemaker's "required reading" list. two thumbs up: :thumbup:

*phew*
I just picked up that one, The complete Bladesmith, and Step by Step Knifemaking since they seemed to come with most recomendation.

Interesting reading - worth the money -but for $50 you get your moneys worth. Anthing you do on the cheap - is still on the cheap. It isn't that hard to do it right. The $50 knife shop is a fun project - not a good beginning point. Lots of good reading though.

My 2 cents

Rob!

Yes,it's worth $20. But you now have a $70 knife shop.
You can't read enough before you get started (and after, too).Don't forget to check the local library ( that's that big building with all the books in it) for books on knife making and blacksmithing.Another good idea is www.technicalvideo.com ,lots of good knifemaking and related videos for rent. Also there are hundreds of tutorials to read and watch on the net. Try www.knifehow.com ,there are about 300 there.

Wayne's $50 Knife shop was my first book on knifemaking. I really dont think the book is worth $20 bucks....

It's worth $200.

That book got me started making knives with files on a picnic table, when I only thought knifemaking was for the elite few who had huge shops and thousands invested in tools and machinery. I hope this book will encourage and inspire you like it did me.

The $50 is just an arbitrary number, if you want to set up an inexpensive shop and build from there, the book tells you how to do it. A major focus of the book is it doesn't matter how much talent or money you have, what matters is the desire. There is more than just how to set up your shop.

Bought it, read it, and I recommend it. You learn the basics. It isn't meant to teach you everything, but to let you know you can do it without spending a lot of money. The $50.00 amount is kinda relative since you can find some things for free and pay only a little for other things he suggests and may not be able to find other things without a more substantial investment.

In other discussions on this board you'll find that the "One Brick Forge" is not mandatory. Just use your own abilities to make your own inexpensive pieces using the proven methods that Wayne explains.

This book is a must for your your knife making library. (Your own book collection) :)

UMM good for the beginer but I think it lacks some detail it did not awnser all my questions

Speaking as a newb who's just about ready to re-heat treat (screwed it up the first time, but didn't damage the blade) his first blade, The $50 Knife Shop is invaluable. No one book will answer all your questions, but it's a good start. For liability concerns, Goddard only skims the surface of gas forge construction, and there are some other gaps I ran into. There are LOTS of great resources online to supplement this book, though, and lots of great knifemakers here who are willing to answer newbie questions.
