I just ordered this book after reading many reviews about it. I'm just wondering if my money was spent well.

Any other thoughts on this book are appreciated :)

I think it's an excellent choice for a first book. It tells how to get set up on the cheap, and covers both forging and stock removal to help you choose which you want to do if you haven't decided yet.

You spent your money wisely, that's possibly the very best first book in terms of learning to think about tools and techniques. You will find that there are many more valuable books and DVDs, and that each will teach you something new every time you read or watch it.

I just got the book myself and it's a real fine read!
Wish I'd had it when I was startin out.
I love books that show you how to make stuff yourself!!

The fifty bucks is for the shop ;) - but you can probably make a knife almost for free if you feel like scrounging. Otherwise I figure a "regular ole knife" costs me about $45 -$60 to make if I use pretty standard stuff. That's direct materials plus abrasives & supplies. Use anything special for the handle or steel, or send it out for HT, and add appropriately. Your time is, of course, free. :D

ok sounds good to me :)

Now the real question is, Can i really make a knife with 50 bucks? lol ;)
No. We knife makers know we don't make a profit. We are in it for the fast weomen and fast cars, and expensive whiskey. If it's any indication, I am still driving a pickup and my wife is 30 years older since I married her. So much for the fast weomen. The book is a good investment, seriously. And yes, you can make a knife for less than $50 and make a profit.

It is good unless. like me, you never have any intent or real ability to build your own tools/equipment, in which case, it isn't really worth it....no offense to anyone...but it helped me none....my wally hayes video and custom knifemaking by tim mccreight were more beneficial to me, but everyone is different....
