I just bought this power hammer.
Comes with 2 hp 220v motor that doesn't work. Anyone know if I can use. 1.5 hp motor at 110 v successfully to power the hammer ?

I don't have 220. Can get it but would prefer to not incur the electrical line setup costs.

Thanks

Congratulations on your power hammer. According to THE LITTLE GIANT POWERHAMMER by Richard R. Kern, on pg. 119-120, A 50 lb power hammer should have a 2hp motor, with a rpm of 1750/1725, and it should run on 220.

Your 1.5 motor would feel underpowered. It would run the hammer, but not to its potential. I have heard folks say they even preferred a 3hp on a LG50- that's what I have on mine, but a 2 as Tom says is the official recommendation and should do fine. It shouldn't be too awful hard to find a 2 hp motor with 120V supply- I've had such a motor before. Of course basically the motor on there would have been perfect, it it ran!
If you have a hammer though, and are getting into that class of work and equipment, sooner or later it would be a good idea to get 220V supply to your shop...
Congrats on the purchase by the way!

I think most 2hp motors that run on 120 cutoff also be wired for 240, so if you did upgrade your electrical you could just change the wiring over.

120 or 240, 2hp is 2hp. The difference is 120 will draw twice the amperage.

No I got to thinking that too because of the grinder threads. 1.5hp is the max output when converting 120 1 phase to 240 3 phase because of the efficiency loss.

No vfd, no phase conversion, you can get a full 2hp, but it needs to be a 20 amp circuit.

Oh I see. That makes sense. So a rated 2 hp motor at 120 v produces 2 hp output with no loss?

Yes. IIRC it will pull 18 amps at full draw. I'm not certain but I want to say the higher draw at lower potential creates heat faster to.
