Not my topic but liked the idea! Imagine you have a friend, (for some of you that's hard :D) that wants to go camping, hunting, you name it, but he has no cutting tools of any kind, nothing, not even a pen knife. He asked for your help...your task is to fill his shopping cart with three cutting tools but since he's not really into knives he gives you a limit of $50. One more thing, the items you choose must be good enough that you would use them.

I'll start,

I found these:
- victorinox Pioneer, $21.49
- mora utility knife, $10.26
- cold steel Latin machete, $14.59

Total = $46.37 free shipping on all items.

Your turn!

Mora - 10.00
Corona Folding saw - 16.00
Cold Steel Shovel - 20.00

Mora to cut stuff, folding saw to process wood, and shovel to dig poop holes. done

-Mora #1 knife $10 plus shipping,
-Tramontina 18' machete $7 or less,
-garage sale shop a used round spade $5-cut off the extra handle length leaving you with a 24" handle and round off the end with a rasp. Make yourself a noggin knocker from the extra handle piece. If you get bored tap your forehead with it until you aren't bored anymore.

Spend the extra on a file and stone to keep them all sharp. Nothing here you have to be shy to use or get dirty. Nothing worse than having tools to nice to use well.

Old Hickory Butcher knife no sheath 10$

Tramontina Machete no sheath 7-10$

Opinel number 09 9$

You'll also have a few bucks left to purchase or make some decent sheaths and maybe a folding saw of some sort.

I would look into a better Machete. I have a cold steel latin machete and don't like it. The blade is very floppy. It also does not come with the sheath for that price, but they will sell you a crappy one for about $10 more.

I think SOG makes one of the best machetes for around $20. I got a Sogfari for $18 and that includes the sheath.

I think 3 knives for $50 is pushing it. Not that it cant be done but if it was my friend I would recommend 2 for that price and getting the third later.

-Mora #1 knife $10 plus shipping,
-Tramontina 18' machete $7 or less,

This is what I would suggest though I may go with a 14 or 12 incher for packability. If you want a hatchet you can trade out the tram for the fiskars/gerber 14 inch hatchet.

Opinel #08 $10
Mora #1 $10
Gerber Exchange a blade $19.99
Automotive Sandpaper (as much as possible for the remaining $) $10

Green River Sheep Skinner (need to make your own handle and sheath) - $15
Cold Steel Norse Hawk - $30
Razor blade - 25 cents (guessing)

Condor Bird, Bottle and Trout $12
Cold Steel Magnum Kukri (2.75mm thick) $21
Mora Companion Knife $17

depends on the friend.

Good friends are hard to find, if good friend, I'd say, bring your $50 to my shop and I'll hook you up! if you dont see what you like, we will make it together and by the end, they will be a knife person.

Ok friend, but has potential to be good friend? this is the world of pawnshopping. victorinox tinker, or the one with the saw added, I've bought for $5 or less. older high carbon hunting knives usually can be had for $10 or less, and I bought a pretty good machete, cant remmeber brand for $6 the other day.

guy you cant really stand, but for some reason you call him friend anyways? refer him to this forum, and dont spend any more time than you have to.

You nailed it!

I've spent a lot of time trying to help people with tool, car, gear choices ......

Almost always, "want" comes before "need".

I've ended up frustrated way more times than I felt that I helped.

Condor kukri w/o sheath
Mora
Svord peasant

Make your own kukri sheath from PVC or kydex for a small price. I think it cost me an extra 12 bucks for PVC and foam.

Imacasa 18" Rozador machete--$12.75
Companion MG Carbon--$10.88
Fiskars Sliding Saw--$20.43

And you still have a few bucks for a cheap synthetic sharpening stone.

German Army issue SAK – Surplus, Blackjack Grunt – thin out the grind, Victorinox flexible fillet. [Might be able to find a Dutch Army Zwanenburg under budget too at a surplus outlet. That'll trade the German SAK for a more contemporary shaped big SAK type and the saw for a big curved safety blade. Cork screw for Philips head though. NB, Not the 1990s version or the budget blowing 2010 series].

Condor Bushcraft Basic $28.32+free shipping
Pro Force commando wire saw $2.67+$0.50shipping
Buck Trio 16.63+free shipping

Total $48.12. You get 4 good blades and an okay wire saw, and all the blades are easy to sharpen with an appropriate found rock and a piece of corrugated cardboard.

From HarryJEpstein&Co:
Mora Robust $15.50
Vaughn Rigbuilder hatchet 12.50
Bahco #339-6T-SAW 20" $20
Pocket stone combo $.65
$48.65

I would have to give him a decent edge on the Hatchet but the Mora and saw are first rate IMHO.

Tramontina 14" Bolo machete - $10
Mora Craftline Robust - $12
Vic. SAK Tinker - $18
Leaves you with $10 for shipping !

Bahco Laplander - $25
Mora Utility - $10
SAK (many models in $15 range - recruit, climber, etc.) - $15

= $50
