Ive got a model 500 "Duke" which does not have the date code that Im use to seeing on my Buck knives. The tang is stamped with the name "Buck" in a old roman or gothic style font.
Under the name is 500 and under that USA.

What year or years was this type of font used?
Thanks!

Kdarmy, The 500 came out in 1975, in 81 they changed from micarta to wood handles,I have both, that have the old english. I am not sure when they changed from the old english to block lettering but it would be after that. I'm interested in when the style of lettering was changed myself. Now that you mention it.

I checked some old blueprints for information on this but they had been re-drawn and the older prints archived. I will check the archives later for clues. I did do a catalogue check and the 1990 cat. shows the old english while the 1991 shows block. Catalogues are not the best reference though so i will double check this.

We are missing a very important piece of information. What is the handle material? Maroon Micarta or Pakkawood? After you determine that, then look carefully at the tang stamp; is there a small dot after the BUCK ? Post an answer and I'll get back to you again.

Ok,
The handle is pakkawood and there is no dot or markings of any other kind on the tang.

Joe, One of my 500's is a 1990 with block lettering. Mid-year change maybe?

It is hard to nail this one down to a specific date, but it must have been made after the change to wood in 1981-'82 and before the tang stamp change in 1989-90

Mike o,

That could be. I will have to wait until i can check all of my sources for info to see if anything comes up.
