So here it is, my new 500^ stag Gold Etch user knife...
got all the dings out of the bolsters, spine, and well edges, and poof! off pops a scale!Bummer!!! This one had been pocketed extensively, and possibly was used for field dressing duties...( the TELL was the gooey stuff in the nail nick, and packed in the well along the lockbar and spring )...COOL!!! I got a user!

Here are the shots of it so far...
as you can see, the gold is all still intact in this shot...

But this shot is more revealing...look at all the scratches from use!

aparently, these etches are much tougher than I had imagined:eek:

Thanx for looking...time to go play some more ;)

Yeah, if you put your sandpaper on a LEETLE TINY Q-Tip and work on that for about a year.......

:D

Interesting knife and project, though.

Keep us posted.

Thanx for the positive comments JB and BG...She's all clamped up now and untouchable for about 12 hours...like I said in my other thread, I believe that the gold will disappear with but a few seconds on a buffing wheel, but I'm not hoping for perfect on this one...just something real nice to have and occasionally use on special occasions :)

Duane....looks like you've got another project going.

Going to be interesting to see how the gold etching holds up to buffing the scratches out of the blade.

What kind of glue have you been using on your handles?? Replacing some chipped Macassar is going to be one of my next experiments. I hope I get to it before my next backpacking trip in a few weeks. :)

Hi Duane -

I am also surprised at the apparent durability of the gold etch!

I had previously only considered the etched blades collector pieces, thinking that the etch would quickly wear off and look bad.

Your knife is going to be a fantastic daily companion - thanks for the pictures!

best

Thanx Stumps and mqqn...no buffing wheel for this blade!!! It will stay as is...and of course will never see EDC tasks such as cutting cardboard etc ;)

a few more pics...

Cleanup won't be too bad...a little sanding and a final buff and she will be done, I'm going to give the resin another 24 hours to reach full cure before proceeding...

Nice work sit, I'd leave the blade alone, looks like the choice of scratches, dulled/damaged gold or completely remove gold and buff. I'd keep the gold if its just a user.

Sit, thanks for the pictures showing how to set the clamps. I do have a couple of popped off scales I need to glue back on. Need to get the clamps first because I already have the glue.

After comparing this Duke to my other Gold 500 Deer Scene, I noticed that the etches were different... The other scene has 3 does and one buck...
Maybe I'll just put this one away and do a Elk antler Re-scale on another Duke...but that's another story...

Nice job...she's a real beauty now!! You do wonderful work!!

I like the bark on those scales too.

Sit,

Your stag Duke project is just fantastic! She looks like a collectors knife again, enjoy it any way you want! If you use her you can always clean her up again;)
