Howdy, all!
My friend is getting married in January and I plan to get him a knife as a gift. I'm still on the fence about which knife to get him, but I'm leaning toward either a 501 or maybe something from the 300 series. He's soon to retire from the Navy and will be looking for a civilian job, so I think a pocketable office-type knife is probably a good choice for him. I know he already has a pocket clip folder (his fiance isn't much help in telling me what it is, but my best guess is that it's a Spyderco or Benchmade, not that it really matters), so I have for now ruled out getting him a Vantage.
My question is: I have seen that the Buck custom shop and third-party folks always offer blade engraving for the 501. Does anyone have any experience engraving the bolsters on the 501? Does the fact that it has a nickel silver bolster and stainless pin make this a poor option? I see many more examples of 110s engraved here, and have seen few 501s.
If anyone has some experience with this, I'd love to hear what you have to say or see what you have to show.
Thank you!
