I am trying to decide between a 501 Squire or a 112FG Ranger. Does anyone have any opinions on which one I should go with? Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

If you carry in your pocket, I would go with the 501. If you carry in a sheath, I would go with the 112. The 112 can be found in brass and NS, the 501 is only NS. I like the blade shape on the 112 better than the drop point on the 501.

The 501 is slim and may roll in your hand under heavy pressure. The 112 just feels great in my hand. It fill the hand and feels great under hard use.

Best bet would be to buy them both.

The 112 is my favorite knife.

Best of luck,
John

There is a considerable size difference. If it's going to be in your pocket, I would go with the 501. If you want a sheath on your hip, 112. I have a feeling that most of the guys around here will steer you toward the 112. I have both and find the 112 to fit me better.
It looks like JohnWayne was faster on the draw!!!

Tony, Well it looks like we are on the same page :D.

The 112 is not sooo bad as a pocket knife either. The 112 also rides good in the watch pocket of jeans. It can fill both rolls where as I think of the 501 as a dress knife.

Another knife you might want to look out for is the Buck 500 (Duke). They have a nice heft to them, and seem close to the size of the 112.

You just can not have to many Bucks.

I occasionally carry my 110 in my front pocket, so a 112 could easily take its place. My 112 has field dressed a few deer. I didn't even consider a 501 for that. I do really like the 500 also! Yeah John, it looks like we are definitely on the same page. "You just can not have too many Bucks."

Depends on how you plan on carrying it and using it... I've been carrying my 112FG a lot lately, it fits the hand very nicely.

If you can get a chance to hold a finger grooved 112 IN your hand..You might like it better than a regular handled one......There is the Bucklite 422 if weight is a factor. The 112 is a great Buck....Mabe the best "all around" folder ever made.....
