My reviews of past threads and internet searches puts the often-lamented (at least, by me), defunct Carbon V as being 50-100-B (aka 0170-6) steel made by long gone Sharon Steel and used also by Camillus, etc. Today we can buy one-piece, forged knives such as the CS drop forged hunter in 52100, a similar carbon steel. I have ordered one, with great hopes for it.

I have one, it is such a pretty knife….have never used it. The design is so basic, nothing fancy. If the zombie apocalypse occurred and I had to pick just one fixed blade, it would probably be the Drop Forged Hunter. I think they’re available for around $40-50 price range, great bargain in my opinion.

I always thought what made Carbon V special wasn't the steel's composition, rather it was the very special heat treat developed for it by Dan Maragni that was unusual for factory production knives. At least at the time. The original Proof Video used to show some Carbon V blades being heat treated--with the salt baths and the repeated quenching. Cold Steel's marketing later seemed to downplay/hide this aspect. Anyway, I highly doubt they are using anything similar for their imported 52100 1 piece knives--would love to be wrong about that though.
