Got an old barlow, i really like the knife its not perfect but no blade play and feels solid, looks like the blade is intact, no re-profile. Interested in your thoughts on the knife. The tang stamp has CAMILLUS in italic, any idea of how old.
Either way couldnt be happier, and it didnt cost me much:D
Thanks
ivan
ps totally unrelated but did camillus ever produce a toothpick line?

Can't help ya with your barlow, but yeah, Camillus has made and sold a few toothpicks..'

Like many thousands of them. Ever seen the Buck 5" texas toothpick? Made by Camillus. The Remingtons, the repro toothpick knives? Made by Camillus. I have a Modern winchester I would bet anything was made by Camillus. And they made them for other companies as well. My favorite Camillus made and marked is the CCC-3, with the 7 mm mauser blade etch.

Not to mention the many toothpick style fishing knives Camillus has made for itself and others. Including one for the US navy.

Here is one of what I believe to be the last production toothpick by Camillus, marked for the Turkey hunters association.

Looking in Goins' Encyclopedia...
Based on the the full line under CAMILLUS, and the amount of space between the New York... and the U. S. A., it looks like the stamp that was used beginning in 1976...except for the italics. Maybe Goins just didn't show the italics? If the handles are sawcut Delrin, it would have to be after folks began using it on knives in the early '60tys at the very oldest.

Still hoping CAMCO or Phil Gibbs will check in on this one.

Bill

el, thanks for the info, i've got a hunch its older than '76, dunno gut feeling
Thanks

I think that your #51 was made late 60's early 70's Camco will tell you if I am wrong. That knife is a good one the bolsters are made of iron. you can test yours with a magnet. It should stick. I can see that the pin holding in the blades has been changed it should be made of iron then you would not see it. That knife will last you a long time. I worked for Camillus for 38 years I have seen alot of barlows. They are good work knives.

Tomas Liggett,
It is a pleasure to have a former Camillus employee here. Many of us here very much appeciate and use and collect products your company made.
Phil

Thomas Liggett, thats what i needed thanks, you are probably dead on about the pin, the blades no longer snap closed but on the whole the knife is solid.
Thank you
ivan

Some times if the blades no longer snap close it could be that the tang of the blade might be worn if it was not oiled. I fixed a lot of those,If the tang was to worn I would replace the blades. Then some times all you need is some oil. Good luck try some oil it might work.

yeah i when i got my hands on it i looked over it and lightly oiled it, still no snap but like i said its still a good knife, the blades dont wiggle at all and the knife stays open and closed just fine, just doesnt snap. Im not too concerned, still gonna carry it.
Thanks for all your help

IVANKERLEY, great knife and very informatve data given here.

Thomas J. Leggitt, I have been meaning to thank you every time you post in here. I have only been lurking on this little part of the mountain for a spell, but I have learned so much every time I read what you and and a few others have to say.. Anyhow, just wanted to say a Big Thank You for helping out in this great little community.

Thomas,
Perhaps you could be so kind as to give me an approximate date on my favorite Camco knife. I love the sheepfoot main blade. The knife is as solid as the day it was made, with no blade play at all. Though it has been used and poorly sharpened, at sometime in it's past, it still takes & holds a good edge. It is a frequent EDC. I wish I could find a few more.

Thank you,
Dale
