I just got home from Christmas and this was waiting for me:

Wow I am impressed! For $65 this is quite a knife, it has nice finishes and came phonebook paper slicing sharp. The 105 is lightweight and carries easily, I wanted another one in carbon steel to compliment the vintage one I already have. This one is a winner:thumbsup:

I love the 105 Pathfinder. Great knife!

The 5160 will take on a new appearance the more you use it... like my 118...

I was thinking for my birthday getting a 124 Fronteirsman but i moght have to rethink that as those look like i would actually beable to carry them?

They are light and carry well, I am normally a folder guy but have carried this one all day with no issues.

I have forced a patina before but I think I will let this one develop naturally. I will probably go out of my way to cut some fruit with it though!

You could also force a patina like I did on my 118, using household condiments like mustards, ketchup and mayo! I would have preferred to have used mine to get a patina, but I lack patience! 5160 is a good steel.
If you're looking for a unique patina pattern, forcing it is the way to go.

Otherwise if you just let the patina develop naturally from using your knives, they'll just sort of be a dull grey with a few spots... My main, everyday, kitchen knife is carbon steel and I EDCd a carbon steel Opinel for a year or so. They both exhibit the same generally dull grey patina with a few interesting spots; definitely nothing so cool as the picture above. Personally I prefer the 'working' patina because it's more 'authentic' or something; but the forced patinas are usually more aesthetically pleasing.

Well, I couldn’t hold out any longer! I just ordered one. My first knife purchase of the new year. -Lance

Wow, Ernie, that’s a nice knife! I just ordered my first Buck (a phenolic black 105), and now I’m jealous of your new one. :)

BTW, this is my first post. Hello everyone. I ordered a 105 as a Christmas gift to myself after reading about so many people passing down Buck knives to children/grandchildren. I’ve got 3 little boys myself, and never been a big knife guy, but I can easily see myself collecting more Bucks to pass down to my sons. I showed them my new 105 the other day and they literally gasped in awe of it.

First ... welcome to the forum Hornbill ...

and this is probably my second favorite Buck knife model ... the first being the Vanguard ... I hadn't heard of the 5160 model but I bet it will make a great knife for Buck ... congrats!

Just got a 110 in 5160, and it's plenty sharp out of the box. And it's a good looking piece of work, with oak handle scales. I really like this steel, I have a crash-axe made of 3/8" 5160 that's as close to indestructible as any tool I have ever seen.

You Sir, are what is known as an enabler. You have causes me to break my New Years Resolution of not buying another knife in 2019 until I had sold at least five of my current collection. However, I couldn't resist the description and pictures of this knife. I now have one on the way! (BTW, thanks for the heads-up on this one!)

You are very welcome! I hope you like it as much as I do:)
