After reading the post of the CS that failed while splitting wood, I was off to the wood pile to test out my hybrid. It is one of the 5160 blanks Busse knives sold to Ranger knives who sold to me to have finished out by Razorback knives. Scott, of Razorback knives does one fine job on a piece of steel. He ground it convex and razor sharp, which it still is thanks to the wonderful heat treat and cryo he put it thru.

The wood I chose was somewhat damp to the touch simulating something I might encounter in the wild. I split it with no problems and was able to get to the dry center. I had no problems splitting cross grain either, just needed a bigger batton.

While my primative fire starting skills still need work, I was able to through a decent amount of sparks with the 5160. I had a good pile of dried leaves and fuzzed up sticks and shavings from the center dry wood, but I could not get it to flame on. That is probably good though b/c I don't think I am allowed an open flame in the city limits :) .

In closing, I have a knife that is up to the task of making wood for the fire even if I am not, yet. I can always fall back in the ole bic and a box of matches :D I have to thank Jerry for letting the public have access to some great knife designs. It is the closest I will ever get to a SHBM, Justin for selling me the three blanks prior to the release of his RD series and Scott for working his magic. I have a knife that I think is up to anything this city boy can throw it's way and still be ready for that SHTF scenario.

(I hope to get some pics up later........I know......I know  )

Cerberus, I'm glad the"Beast" is tackling the jobs you put it through. I feel that 5160 is the steel best suited for wood spliting and chopping tasks. Would love to see some pics of the blade in action.
