i have a already hardened 5160 blade that i would like to try my new heat treat on. but all of the annealing temperatures i have seen are heat to this, then cool to this rapidly, then hold for hours, then air cool to this. well you get the idea so can i just heat to what degrees for how long and furnace cool overnight?

i need temps and times please.

never needed to anneal before thanks

As a beginner(see how we're putting that as a preface to every post now?) I have found that "Put in the kiln at 1650 and allow to slowly cool with the door closed" does a really effective job. It certainly works as well as "Heat to orange and stick it in a bucket of vermiculite" does.

My chart states: Heat to 1525° air cool to 1250° hold for 6 hours
Leaving it in a kiln should cool it slowly enough to be effective.

I posted "As a beginner" because I don't want you to think that I'm am expert who has done this thousands of times. This is how I have done it and it has worked. The logic behind it makes sense and the results are usable.

Attached is a chart I compiled from various sources including Evenheat kilns, Kevin Cashen's website, Crucible and other manufacturers' datasheets,. They aren't the only way to do things, but following them will get you started.
