5160 steel

How is 1/4" 5160 steel compared to 1/4" 1095 if both are heat treated correctly?

Thickness has nothing to do with it.

5160 is the better steel.

it is tougher, and will patina better than 1095. It is also easier to heat treat.

It is what most car leaf springs are made of.

extremely tough steel. excellent stuff. Bill Siegle does it best, but he doesn't seem to be making anymore.

It's not better because it

Patinas better then 1095

.

Or because it's

easier to heat treat

It's better because it's a higher alloyed steel,

...the additional alloys bring things to the table that the simple 10XX steels don't have.


And Yes, it is a spring steel (read tough and resilient).
