Hi guys,

I am using SAE 5160 for some blades. When I asked local (south African) blade smiths about the heat treat process, many of them told me to remember they American 5160 was different from ours. Has anyone heard of this? What dose the SAE stand for? Would the heat treat be that different from what is recommend with US 5160? Thanks

I think you might want the "Knifemakers" sub-forum, this is the "Knife Laws" sub-forum where legal issues involving knives are discussed.

You can find the Knifemakers sub-forum here- https://www.bladeforums.com/forums/shop-talk-bladesmith-questions-and-answers.741/

Also, "SAE" usually stand for "Society of Automotive Engineering", it's an organization that basically deals in engineering standards (not just automotive related), and is typically used to indicate a means of measurement, or a type of tool or piece of hardware like nuts, bolts, washers, etc.
