Hi guys,

I am using SAE 5160 for some blades. When I asked local (south African) blade smiths about the heat treat process, many of them told me to remember that American 5160 was different from South African 5160. Has anyone heard of this? What dose the SAE stand for? Would the heat treat be that different from what is recommend with US 5160? Thanks

Dunno if one 5160 is the same as the other, but SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers.

Here's their page about the numbering system that "5160" comes from.

Basically each batch of 5160 should fall within certain parameters dictated by the standard. So much carbon, so much silicon, etc. But each is a range of values, so it's very possible that the 5160 that you have is not the same as the 5160 that I have. But it should have very similar properties.

Thank you! Haha I’m actually looking into this after watching your videos and reading your article and trying to figure out if it applies to my steel :)

Could be they are importing a European alternative that would be somewhat different.
If they are doing that do you think your findings and suggestions would still work for this steel? Thanks and I really appreciate your articles and videos!

I hope the supplier can provide you with certification/analysis. If not you're fumbling around in the dark
