Can 5160 be forge welded,if so what color range, Ive welded up 10xx,and others and never had problem. Cant get 5160 to weld up...help Thanks,Bob M.

I'm not sure the exact temperature Bob. I pay more attention to the surface appearance than the color. Look for a liquid looking shadow. Use a coat hanger to see if it's ready. If the hanger sticks, you are ready.

5160 welds quite well. I'm not sure why you would have a problem unless you aren't getting it quite hot enough!

You definately have to get the 5160 a little hotter than you do the 10 series steels.Other than that it welds up really nice for me...Just keep experimenting and you will get it.Remeber it isnt a real high carbon steel and thus takes a little more heat.

I've successfully welded 5160 before. I've heard that it can be difficult to weld to itself, so use other material for the outer layers.

well thanks guys,I did it. I drew out a 5/8 d. x 10 chunk of coilspring, drew to 20 folded, and reapeated so that 4 layers. I ground the ends and sides clean then soaked in muratic acid for 1/2 hour to my surprise no lines, yeah. Of coarse this all came about cause I need a bar 1 3/8x 1/4x 15. Somthing tells me I still dont have enough material. Oh well
