I've already posted this in the gallery forums but wanted you guys to see it right here. What do you think of this pic? Any better? The knife is 1/4" by 1 3/4" 5160, flat grind, edge hardened and gun blued. Bone scales, 4" blade and handle.
BTW, that's my belt buckle I had handmade by Red Bluff buckles in New Mexico and the handgun is a Ruger Bisley 41 mag leaning on a wild boar skull.

I think the knife looks pretty awesome, and I like the setup of the shot, but there are two things wrong with the picture:
1) It's still not showing off the blade real well (blade is very dark)
2) The resolution is weird and all pixelated.

I'm spoiled because I have Photoshop, so I can save for the web and make enormous pictures very manageable without losing too much quality. Don't know what non-Photoshop people would use, but there must be something. Also, I'd really suggest finding that light tent post by Coop and make one. I thought it was stupid at first, but once I got things worked out it works really great and you can take consistent pictures any time of day, etc. Just build a bigger one to hold your props and you're good to go!

But, this is still a big step up from the scans. What I've noticed is the better the pictures I have for a knife, the easier it sells. I've even taken quickie junkie pictures to get them up there, had no activity, then replaced them with good pics and the knife sells immediately. If I had fast Internet I would offer to doctor (haha) up your pictures and email them back, but I don't, so I can't. :(

I like the set up but, he's right. The photo is too dark. Are you using a light box? I can send you pix of what I use, if you'd like.

Looks good Scott
Since the knife is blued, I'd guess the colors are pretty close in the pic. Its about matches the ruger, and color on it looks about right

Thats a cool belt buckle too  I've got a couple big ones I won at horseshows, don't wear em real often though, I'd scratch them up.

Thanks guys. I have a program for ajusting pics but need to practice and learn what it has. J. if you could send that, that might be a help. I saw Dan Koster's light box set up on his site and it looks like an easy set up. BTW, the knife is blued so that's why it looks dark. It has three applications of cold blue.

How did you HT your 5160 Matt? Great package!
Robert, I heated to non-magnetic along the edge with a mapp torch and edge quenched in 120 degree transmission fluid. I tempered with a propane torch three times bringing it to a straw color. The edge is hair popping sharp. Thanks

Good job, and it goes well with the pistol. Good job getting the Bisley in .41 mag too, as the .41 is a highly underrated cartridge, being overshadowed by it's (somewhat overrated :) ) brother, the .44 mag. Dirty Harry's fault, I'd say.

Thanks again guys. jiminy, you're right about the 41. It's got good knock down power with a 210 gr bullet and the recoil is very controllable compared to the 44. The problem is not enough bullet selection as the 44. This gun I bought used and it had a trigger job, smooth action.

J., I got everything I need for the box except the bulbs. Some of the stuff I already had laying around the house.
rebeltf, thanks for the link, I'll check it out. I do have a program for my camera but I need take the time to see everything it has.

Scott that is one man's knife! I like all your stuff, but that one has a real burly feel to it, even more than usual. I like the bone scales a lot.

As to adjusting the picture darkness, your program will have something like a brightness/contrast choice in the menu. Just slide the pointer until you get it the way you want. It's kind of a fine line between getting the detail you want and some parts of the pic being too washed out sometimes, but it does help a lot. I use Photoshop Elements but there a a number of good free programs available. I used Paint Shop Pro for a long time and it's a great program. Almost as good as the full blown Photoshop (Elements is stripped down for digital photography), and about 1/6th the price. Elements is just a little more than PSP but I like it just a little better. ;)

I used a light box for a long time and finally got fed up with it because it was always in the way. If you have a space you can dedicate to photography you're a lucky human. If you're like me and have to set up every time you want to take pictures you'll want something you can store away easily. I found a nice light tent on eBay for about $50 that is super, I get much better light diffusion than I did with my other thing and it folds away to almost nothing. I'm very happy with it. Now, if I could just learn how to use my camera...!

Good going Scott, thanks for sharing that great knife.

Thanks Dave. ;) This knife was fun because I did it all. I just hope my heat treating is going to be ok. I'm forever second guessing myself. It had a very distinctive temper line and sharpen to a hair popping edge so I'm guessing I got it right. The 5160 took the cold blue very nicely. It was a neat match with the Ruger. It would really be cool if the handgun had stag grips. :) As far as the light box, no I don't really have room but most of the materials I already had so it's not costing as much. It will take some practice I guess.

Hey, I know you can do that man - I've done it for both my wife and myself. It's cool to have a little (or in your case not so little) carry knife to match your iron. :D

Good design, looks real handy. Like the belt buckle too, good advertisment :D
Thanks Will, I get alot of nice comments about the buckle. It was a bit pricy to have made but it's one of a kind.
