Well, I am going to set some 52100 410 San Mai for my santoku kitchen knife. I was wondering who can do the HT for it and if it will be like regular 52100 where tempering cycles can improve the quality of the steel and toughness, etc. Can anyone help me with this??? Also, how will this be to grind compared to A2, O-1 and 1095? Thanks guys!

Without knowing anyting at all, I would treat it as 52100. The best thing to do is to ask the maker how they do the heat treat. Most of the damascus steels are teated as to the highest carbon steel to avoid any excessive hard spots.

Thanks for the info. it isn't a damascus, rather a san mai like cold steel with a core of 52100 clad in 410ss. I wasn't sure if the 410ss would affect the HT or not. I will get apiece 16" long, so I might have an extra 4 or 5" to practice grinding and HT on. Can I weld some drill ord on the end of the extra and make a hidden tang out of it?

Taz, I just sent This 52100 thread BTT for you. It contains information about two different methods for 52100 HT. I still think you ought to talk to someone like Ed Caffrey (CaffreyKnives.com) to discuss your particular application. Good luck.
