It's been a while since I sent a batch off to Peter's for heat treating, not sure if they made some changes.

That being said, I sent them a batch of 52100. They used to come back blackened, this latest batch came back blue/purple. Anyone know what they're doing differently?

I also noticed that they didn't hardness test each individual blade like they used to.

What was your target hardness?

I gave Peter's a call and spoke with Brad.

Apparently, he said they have upgraded their furnace and the oil hardened steels come out much cleaner. So I'm probably just seeing the coloring from the temper.

I wonder what the new furnace is?
They used a fluidized bed furnace before.

Tempering temp was my initial thought. Last year I had three blades in the oven at what I thought was 385*F, turned out that I’d mistakenly set it at 485*F and had the blue-purple-ish color you mentioned.
