I am thinking of taking some low temp forged, normalized and annealed 52100 to the OKCA show in Eugene. The steel will be in bar form about 1 1/4" wide by 3/16" thick and about a foot or so long. How many of you that are going would be interested in the purchase of said bars? I will also have a hand out of how to heat treat this steel. What would be a fair price?.... NO REALLY.:D

Dave,

I don,t have any yet. I was trying to asses the interest level before ordering. If you just want a piece to play with I will forge down a piece for you and send it. It won't be surface ground how ever. send me an e-mail with your particulars.

I wouldn't mind trying a piece of that ether.
I have my own surface grinder so that's not a problem.
shoot me a mail with a number.

I suspect there would be a great deal of interest. I'd like a piece or 2, I know that. Needless to say I won't be attending that show either. But I'd be interested in getting some.
Please shoot me an e-mail at chbcnc@yahoo.com
I figure you'll get swamped with these requests before too much longer. :D

Thanks to all of you that are interested. What I am trying to do is a market study to find out what interest there is in this kind of thing. The more of the steel that I buy the cheaper the cost will be. The 52100 that I am looking at getting will be forged down from large diamater bars, at low temp. This should give the same results as Ed and I are getting with our forged blades. All that would be required is proper heat treating for the stock removel knife maker to see if forged steel is the big ticket or if all us forgers are out of our heads. I will send a letter with the heat trement method that we are using with each bar mailed. The draw back may be the cost. That is why I am trying to asses the interest.
what would be a fair way of priceing this material, by the pound or by the inch like the damascuss boys do?

Bill

I could`nt tell you Bill.
I got some .140x3/4"x72" from Sheffield
for $8.00. They also sale it at $3.50lb
for 50#. They got 1/8"x1 1/2" but no price.

Bill, I would be interested, depending upon price and size. I make full tang knives as well as hidden and through tangs, so surface grinding is an issue. I am getting a surface grinder next month so I can grind it myself. However, 3/16" would be a bit on the thin side for some of my blades if I had to grind off forging scale or divots. I would be more interested in 5/32" and 1/4" thicknesses when grinding is necessary. Pricing is a bit tougher. I would have to carefully consider the benefits of using 52100 if the price for an unground product was similar to precision ground AISI O1. I plan to be at Eugene and will be interested to see what you have.
