So I just got a presidio ultra in a trade, and I'm hoping I can get some thoughts.

Have any of you broken the tip? It's crazy thin.

How is benchmade's 440c? I've never really used 440c.

Are the non bronze washers a big deal in durability? It certainly opens and closes smooth but they always concern me.

I'm thinking of trading for a mini grip or selling with a couple others and getting a m390 Contego.

Thanks for any thoughts!

Benchmade used Nylatron washers for years and I never had problems with any of my knives. They will replace these with phosphor bronze on request, but there's nothing wrong with them.

440C as done is an excellent blade steel. It's very corrosion resistant and takes a great edge. Unless you're going to pry something and use the blade as intended there should be no problems with the thin tip, and the Grivory (if that's what the scale material is) give a solid grip and feel really good in the hand.

I find the Presidio dimensions of the 522 to be much more comfortable than the Contego was that I bought and sold, but your mileage will vary with this.

Thanks for the reply. All makes great sense. I am leaning towards keeping it, loving the action and super thin grind.

I own a Grip, a Mini Grip, and a 14210. When I had to fly out to do some training a few years ago, I forgot my knife, and really couldn't be without one. I figured I'd pick up a cheap knife on base. When I got to base, they had the Presidio Ultra for $50 or something on sale, so I picked it up.

I carried it up until a few months ago. I really like it. I'll still carry it occasionally but I'm currently trying out a PM2 that is pretty good.

I like it much better than the grips and HK axis knives I have. I'll likely give them to family, as I don't use them and I'm not much of a collector. The Presidio just fit how I use a knife really well. I don't know much about blade grinds and ergonomics, I just know it opened - cut - closed and did that very well and one handed.

My experience as well. I have a 527 that my wife carries in her car FAK. I've used BM's 440C in mini-Grips and it's been a great steel. I really like the thin grind on the Ultra versions of the Presidio and i'm actually considering getting one for me to carry as a smaller everyday user. They do feel great in hand and I like the scales better than the aluminium on the 525s. I've never had an issue with anyone's nylatron washers. I've had them in Bucks, Emersons, and one or two others.

Well it sounds like no one has had issues with it. I still think there's more of a hole to be filled in the 2.5"-3" blade category, but we'll see.
