...geegee...The 531 was introduced in 1988 as a Scott Sawby project. This form was made in 1988 and 1989 in very limited numbers with the Sawby locking system. Problems were assigned to the design and before full-scale production could start the knife and design for the lock was stopped. The knife was slightly redesigned and re-released in 1990 with a mid-lock as your's and mine now have. The knife was the "big brother" to the 532 which also was produced with the mid-lock design. For whatever reason, the 531 was discontinued in 1994 due to lack of sales performance. Between It's introduction in 1988 and it's discontinuation in 1994 only 24100 were produced in total. The steel used up to 1994 was 425M and the 1994 version was 420HC. Your knife with the "X" date code is 1990 production. Mine with the " - " date code is 1992 production. Your's and mine have 425M steel. The sheath should be a tan colored sheath. The model has been re-released from time to time as a Limited Edition for various occasions. The 532 is still produced as a limited edition from time to time. Hope I was able to be of some help...
