#54 Big Jack question

Hi all - I am thinking of buying a #54 Big Jack. I am wondering how easy it is to open the clip blade with the nail nick for it sitting right behind the spear blade. I have read that this pattern has pretty strong springs so I am wondering if that combination makes it difficult to open the clip blade. It would be so much easier if I could find a #54 Big Moose with the handle that I want, but looks like nowadays the Big Jack is my only option.

Thanks for the opinions!

I like the 54s. The only one I have currently has long pulls. I have had jacks with a nail nick and found them very tolerable to open. The clip opens fairly easy I feel due to it being behind the spear you have good surface area on the pile side plus the peak of the spine is tall enough to get a good grip on the mark side to open well. If the spear were gone and it was pinchable you could easily punch it open. I'm not sure why but patina makes blades slightly more grippy and allow to be punched as well. The patina etch must toughen up the surface. Hope this helps. If I confused you, I apologize.

I've been carrying the Brimstone Bone with 3 blades for about a month now. The main clip sits in the middle of the long pen and long Spey. It opens nice and smooth.

I have a 54 Big Jack and it's a real bear trap, I'd say at least an 8 for pull on the clip and a 7 for the spear.

When I broke my thumbnail, I pretty much couldn't open the clip before it healed. Love the knife tho, and the stout pull was one of the selling points for me.

The 98 cattle knife replaced the Big J as one of my EDCs when it was released earlier this year. Much easier opening.

Or buy a moose in pull you like, nick or long pull. There are ways to buy bone and have someone recover it.

Instead of compromising on the blade configuration, I would upgrade to a Moose in stag! :)

Haha I was tempted actually...but I really love that black/orange look. There are some smooth autumn golds still around but they're too Creamsicle looking for my taste.

I have a 54 Autumn Bone Jack, it's my favorite knife.
I does have a strong pull and snap, I like it though, it's a good strong knife.
It takes an unbelievable edge too, and can handle real hard tasks.
I worked with it today, I love this knife.
