Ill be heading to SMKW next week, and I've narrowed it down to getting a 550-1 or a 940. Out of these two options, which would you pick for harder edc use? All comments are appreciated.

It depends what you want une them for...
I think the 949 is a better "urban" EDC where the 550-1 will be a better "hiking" EDC....
I like the 940 for it ability to disappear in pockets while keeping a large (long) blade, but I won't feel much comfortable with it for hard task (even if actually it can take a lot).
The ergos and blade shape of the 550-1 make it a more comfortable knife for hard tasks...

Picked up 550-1 and 940-1 both at same time at a Homeland security convention with my dad, the 940-1 sits in my pocket every day that my PM2 doesn't 550-1 sold on here couple months ago lol, 940 is amazing same size blade in so muh smaller and slimmer profile

550 has very thin hollow grind, not so suitable for hard use edc. I'll go with 940 for that purpose. I personally believe 940 is capable to withstand lots hard use even more than PM2 unlike many suggests. I'd get 940-2 then 555-1.

940 or 940-1501.......cause they are soooo incredibly cool!!

I'm partial to Griptilians mainly Ritters but I have a 940-1501 coming. I say Ritter as well.

I have a 940-2, 943 (swapped the blades), and a BM Custom Shop 550. These are really two completely different knives.

I prefer the 94x for smaller jobs, not that it can't do bigger jobs, but with the small handle medium duty jobs feel harder than with a knife with a larger, thicker, handle. For example, if I had to cut up a 4'x3'x2' cardboard box, or push cut through some evergreen shrubs on a regular basis, I would grab the 550 instead. If it's just an EDC that sees occasional use or light use, the weight savings and reduction in heft is welcome, and I know it is still very capable if needed to press it for harder duty. I will say, that the original aluminum scaled version has less flex.

The 550 has many variants in blade shapes and metals (saber grind, hollow grind, Ritter high grind; 154CM, M390, 20CV, M4, etc.). There seems to be more room for artistic creativity with handle scales on the 550's too, since there is more G10 to work with (see some of the custom scales by Deathofallthings and Keyman). You even have the choice of a thumbstud or a thumbhole on different models.

If you want a tester, the basic 550 should run you around $100 depending on where you get it. That's almost half the price of the 940.

Personally, although I'm currently carrying a custom 550, I'm still going through BM Presidio withdrawal (154CM w/ aluminum handles), and might have to switch back to that soon. That knife, however, doesn't seem too popular.

Here's a pic of my commonly carried 943 and 550. Hopefully it illustrates the difference in heft of the handles:

I missed the harder edc use, take a good hard look at the contego. People complain about the rough in the hands thing, but the knife feels like it was made for my hands.

The split arrow clip goes perfect with the looks of the 940 IMHO.... I'd still get the 940 and not think twice about it..
I have the original and the 940-1501..! I love them, the best thing in your case is that you get to try them all on and go with what feels best to you.
