550 cord is great for boot laces. One problem, though, is that if you use your laces for cordage in a survival situation, how do you keep your boots on? What I did was to make my laces 80 inches long, which is quite a bit longer than needed. Should I have to use the laces as emergency cordage, I could take the inner strands from both laces, giving me a little more than 90 feet of small diameter cord (assuming you're using 7 strand USGI paracord), plus the outer sheaths. I could take one outer sheath, cut it in half, and have a 40 inch boot lace for each boot, plus the other outer sheath for big lashing jobs. The laces would be a little shorter than standard, but still usable to keep your boots on. I wrap the ends of the extra-long laces into the tops of my boots, and tuck them out of sight. Works great, especially since the 550 cord is MUCH stronger and more abrasion resistant than regular boot laces.
