Sorry if this has already been thought of and discussed before, but I just got an idea. Would paracord work for shoelaces? If you used it for your shoelaces, you could have a pretty good amount with you at all times. You could tye the cord from both shoes together or something. Has anyone ever done this? Please tell me your opinions.

I use it in my work and in my hiking boots. I find if you take out the "guts" the shoe knots stay tied better, but you are then losing the use of the "guts" and the added strength.

Exactly what I do, I use 550 cord in my work boots (Danner Ft. Lewis and USGI boots) I make the laces extra long and wrap them around the tops.
Plus you can either have green or black laces.
Take care,
Chad

550 cord is great for boot laces. One problem, though, is that if you use your laces for cordage in a survival situation, how do you keep your boots on? What I did was to make my laces 80 inches long, which is quite a bit longer than needed. Should I have to use the laces as emergency cordage, I could take the inner strands from both laces, giving me a little more than 90 feet of small diameter cord (assuming you're using 7 strand USGI paracord), plus the outer sheaths. I could take one outer sheath, cut it in half, and have a 40 inch boot lace for each boot, plus the other outer sheath for big lashing jobs. The laces would be a little shorter than standard, but still usable to keep your boots on. I wrap the ends of the extra-long laces into the tops of my boots, and tuck them out of sight. Works great, especially since the 550 cord is MUCH stronger and more abrasion resistant than regular boot laces.

To keep just about any bow-type knot more secure, try tying an extra half hitch when tying the bow - make your "ears" and then tie a surgeons knot - they "stay" a lot better. I use this type of knot for my shoes, as well as for my work scrubs - the knot has never slipped in my experience.

How about the 550 cord belt? Remember reading a post here about making one. I'd prefer to keep the laces on my shoes. Besides having a belt, I could carry a lot more cord and still have enough to hold my pants up!

I wouldn't want to sacrifice either my belt or my bootlaces, but I have been wondering if paracord could be "weaved," by chrochet or macreme (sp) into a hatband, say about an inch and a half wide, out of a single strand. If it was ever needed, a hatband is a whole lot more expendable. :D

So, any ideas if this would work?

I don't know anything about macrame or knitting or the like, but the paracord belt idea should be usable as a hat band as well as a belt. I looked at the site once (can't remember the addie, though) and it seemed like a LOT of work. But, the finished product looked nice, and would work great as a hat band, scaled down of course. You might try a search to find the instructions.

You don't need to make his useful tool, just use a crochet needle.

Think I'm going to try this with 3mm cord.
