Truth to be told, I have been skeptical on Custom knife maker page http://customknife.benchmade.com/knives/ page. Yeah, I know. But didn't want to pay Griptilian 551 where local brick and mortar sports shop selling 154cm version for $75 brand new.
I have been eyeing on 550HG for a while. As a matter of fact, I bought it for my wife so that she feel comfortable jogging in woodland in my neighbor. She feels comfortable with it, but I dont know about you, but I am definitely not a fan of hollow grind. I thought about using Rift, but it is slightly heavy for jogging. I have been carrying Rift for few years now. I know recently BKC has released S30V version, 950-1401. I already own 3 Rift 950s, so I was on the hedge on getting 950. I recall I made a post about what to bring to jogging. Since my area, town ship / home owners association is making it violation on firearm discharge, I dont carry it during day time. Still, my wife, who jogs with me from time to time has insisted to carry knife for self-protection. Unfortunately, I was not happy with 550HG. My friend who carried 550HG broke its tip, because 154cm in hollow grind couldnt withstand to how he handles his blade.
I really wanted lightweight 3.5 blade with thumbhole opener. I was forced to resort to $pydie..
The good news is that recently Jason from Benchmade has answered my question on Wouldnt it be nice to have Saber Grind in 550. I was so excited that he has replied that S30V and D2 in 550 are saber grind.
For those who are also my fellow 950 Rift enthusiast, please see the following picture. As you can see, the contour of the blade are very similar.
So, here is my current WDC (Week Day Carry) candidate. Top to bottom, 950BK-1 mod, 550SG-S30V custom, 551 S30V custom, 551.5-1401.
Over all, I would like to request Benchmade PR folks to advertise 550 can comes in Saber Grind. Not to mention S30V is wonderful steel that is highly used in Hunt line as well. It is such a sleeper of a knife, I consider 550SG to be my new jogging / Go to swimming companion. It has heft and tip strength similar to that of Rift, and portability, and light weight of Griptilian. Not to mention variety of aftermarket handles provided by various artisans who frequent this and many other knife forum.
