Got a 30% off coupon from Benchmade & was thinking about getting a full size griptilian (already have a mini grip). I can't decide between a 551 & 550HG, any thoughts?

I am not sure how you do it, but you can get flat ground 550's in I think D2 and S30V in the customizer shop at Benchmade.

This is just my opinion, but the big hole in the blade is a serious weak spot if you had to pry something. Most people will say you shouldn't pry with a knife, and I know this. But there's always a chance of an emergency situation where it might be needed. It's why I won't buy a knife with an opening hole. Just my thoughts.

I personally prefer the sheepsfoot\hole model because it's typically hollow ground so it's a better slice than the standard drop point model and the sheepsfoot is very easy to resharpen to a crazy edge.

550HG for me, thumb stud can be missed in a tight situation, Hell I even enlarge some of the holes.

I just picked up a 550HG and really like it. Blade shape and grind are great for everyday cutting. I don't usually cut food with it, but have and it works very well. Just resharpened it tonight with my Worksharp sharpener and was able to put a very nice edge on it. I also think it is a neat looking knife and very functionally designed.

My vote goes for 550HG but I really enjoying an opening hole rather than thumb stud. As another poster stated its hard to miss that hole even with gloves on.

I did just that with a mini Grip. Only problem is I had to send it back because no one cared if the colors of the scales matched. Waiting for its return.

IMHO, I think the sheeps foot blade is great for most normal EDC functions. However, if possibly hard use is in the cards, go with the modified drop point.
