56C frame motor mounting position?

Can I mount 1.5-2HP motor horizontaly on C-face only or it has to be supported by base as well. Those 56 frames are made of cast aluminum, is it rigid enough for a grinder application for example?
 
Mine are mounted with just the 4 bolts. I'v had this set up on two machines for over 14 years without seeing a problem. They are made to do it that way. FRank
