I went to a local sporting good store and held both of these knives in my hand. They both felt beautiful to hold and fit well in my pocket, I'm just not sure which one to go with.

I liked the barrage because of the assisted opening and it opened solid.

I had a problem opening the 551, but that may be me being new to the knife.

Both would be used in the role of EDC, and have the same blade steel it seems, 154CM, with ever so slightly differences in hardness.

Whats your take on the situation??

I have both knives and a 551D2. Get the 580, its more bang for your buck unless you go to Cabela's and pick up a 551D2, which cost me $105.

ill vote for the grip.

i think its ergos are better..that was based off a 585 not a 580. i have both sizes of grip.

The 551 gets my vote, I am not a fan of assisted openers and the Grip is a Benchmade classic.

I would have to say the 580,ever since I go my hands on one it has been my EDC. I also love how it has a safety lock which is not available on other BM except for their LEO auto knives.

I'd say 580 because my experience with the axis assist mechanism is superb. My mini barrage is my go to edc.

My vote goes to the 551. As far as I'm concerned, assisted openers and automatics slow down the overall opening/ closing speed of the axis lock. They also take away the fun of having one.

I don't think the steel difference will really matter to anyone new to knives or even anyone who didn't already know which steel they were using. I'd be more than happy with the older steel the griptilian uses (440C) or the 'regular' steel (154cm). Paying more to get D2 or S30V isn't really that big a deal, though there's nothing wrong with them.
