585 vs 586 or just 581? :-)

Hi Guys,

I lost my 585 at the range (I went back but no doubt someone with a 6 year old's: "finder's keeper's mentality" has it)! I just ordered a 581 AND a 585. I always thought the full-size Barrage was cool if less practical so I'm keeping the 581 no matter what as I will carry it on weekends/hunting. I opted to get the 585 too as I thought the 581 might "tell" at work and if I used it it would have more of a "freakout effect" there. (585 was OK there but I minimized the "switchblade" effect and/or mostly kept it in my pocket). Now I am driving myself nuts with:
1) Just use the 581-close enough in size to the 585/6, save money, no one looks/thinks about what's in your pocket use it discreetly if at all, etc. Will it hide pretty well?
2) 585 it for work
3) Get the 586, nice matching set, but now of course you've spent $$$ that you weren't going to spend at all if you hadn't lost the 585!! Being "forced" to buy the awesome 581 took the pain away but do I really need the 58-SIX too?!

Anyone else go through this? Any help here besides, "you need to see a shrink?!"

Thank you so much in advance to anyone who cares to answer!

Steve

Hey, M390 is attractive options. I'm sure you will encounter steel snobs around here (Including myself).

I love Barrage and owns full size myself, but I am not warmed up for mini version. My wife loves them, but it is a tad bit small for me.

If you are concerned about sheeple at your office, Benchmade without assist can be discreet. I personally love 940-1 at my office. With relaxed office ma even use 950, 551, etc.

I like the minis. I have a 585 and 2 586s. They are really good for everyday stuff and they don't seem to bother most people 'round here.

Depends on if you are a steel snob like MFL above says. If you prefer M390, get the 586.
Also you may look into getting a deep carry pocket clip to help hide it some more.

I prefer the mini. I like the blade length and the handle size is perfect for my medium hands. I de-assisted mine.

There is a noticeable difference between the 586 and the 581 for office carry (wish I'd gotten my 581 up for sale sooner -- you could have saved some money!):

As for 586 vs 585, the 586 wins for an office/sheeple environment due to aesthetics. It's not all black. Functionally, it wins with the higher flat grind vs. the 585. Combine that with a steel that is far superior (yes I'm a steel snob, but it's not like we're comparing 154CM to s30v), and the 586 is where it's at. Just sell the 585, or see if you can return it unopened for a refund and get the 586.

The other knife to consider for office carry is the 484 Nakamura. 3" M390 blade with a manual Axis lock (no freaking people out if the spring assist gets away from you), and sclupted G10 scales. I'm very tempted to sell my 586 and get this one. My wife hates my 586 because it fires out so hard.

Love my 586. Its pretty underrated, IMO. Do a youtube search for "benchmade 586 review" and you only get maybe 2 actual reviews.....

The m390 is sweet and the size is perfect for me, both in hand, and in terms of not scaring anyone. Deassisted mine

Just buy both. You're going to eventually anyway.

You know me well somehow, Jon! I just returned the 585, losing only $7.50 in S&H, but picked up a new 586 at a great price on eBay! I carried the 581 all day today in a dress pants pocket. It's actually fairly concealable but I realized very clearly that the sheeple I work with would freak if I actually used it! I think the 586 therefore is a better choice for EDC where I work anyway and most daily chores. (Of course I even unzipped a deer with one so you can certainly do a lot with it! :) I'm going to use the 581 for full time weekend carry and as a back-up hunting knife though as I'm just so impressed with it! Has anyone bought that blue tool kit? Worth it? I can't find my tool to tighten the scales anywhere. Thanks everyone for your help!

I have several of their Blue Box kits in different places. They're very easy to store and use.

The little blue torx kit is definitely worth it.

It works on Benchmade, Spyderco, and more. It's also super compact and size efficient.

I have the Benchmade blue box kit, it's an over priced Taiwan made piece of junk with crap bits. I would get the Boker Torx Toolkit which is made by Wiha in Germany. The machining on the bits put the blue box to shame.

I added a photo to try and show what I mean. T6 and T10 Blue Box bits on the left, T6 and T10 Wiha bits on the right.

The Wiha bits have very precise machining and fit the screw heads extremely well with little play so they want mar or strip them over time. The Blue Box bits look almost like blobs, especially with the smaller torx sizes they are barely even recognizable and fit the screw heads poorly. They look to be the same bits you find in every China made Torx set.

Given an option between these two kits since they are priced about the same I could not see any reason on earth not to get the Wiha (Boker) set.
