5OT questions

I have seen 5 OTs called both Bruin and Smokey? Does anyone know the story on the two names? Did Bruin replace Smokey at some point?

Also I have a 5OTG with the green handles and brass bolster. I noticed there is a nickel-silver pin through the brass bolster, which looks kind of strange to me. I noticed the one on Larry's site is also like that. Were they all that way?

Dave, can only aswer one question. The brass bolsters has a stainless steel pivot pin to reduce wear, brass if softer than SS, so they figured it would be more durable to use a SS pin in place of a brass one, it does look strange, all the brass bolstered lockblades I know of were like that. Except for the ones I rebuilt

MM, thanks, that makes sense from an engineering point of view. Sort of defeats the purpose of having a brass bolster tho... I can just imagine some of the discussions on the factory floor about that.

Hoping someone will come along with the Smokey / Bruin story.

This is from memory...or what passes for it.

I thought the Smokey was a medium lockback (LB5?) in the Uncle Henry lineup...while the Bruin (EXT) and Bearhead (EXT) were linerlocks in the Old Timer lineup.
