Hi gang. I need a little help.

My son had his ipod stolen. A friend had a 5th gen ipod classic and he agreed to buy it. It worked when he bought it, and failed a day later. Bad luck.
My message to him was, "You made a deal, you accepted the ipod, you installed your library and it failed. You need to honor your word"

So, he has paid the $75. I have told him that I would make him a deal. If he agreed to contact apple and find out what the repair options are, I would buy the defective ipod from him.

I am hoping to teach two lessons.
1. Your word is your bond.
2. How to deal with a company appropriately when you have a concern.

All that being said, the unit will not start up. It goes to a white screen with the apple support website. I suspect either a hard drive failure or battery failure. Anyone been through this and what should I expect while watching him deal with apple?

well you could try resetting it, hold down the middle button and the menu button at the same time, and if you live near an apple store you can take it in a have them run a diagnostic on it.

Try erasing the memory. Here is a link which gives you instructions on how to do so. Your son will loose anything stored on the iPod but it may get rid of what is going bad on the iPod.

For me dealing with Apple has always been a breeze. If you are near a Apple store they will check out the iPod for free.

Thank you all.

Will try the memory purge tonight.
There is an Apple store about 50 miles west fo here. Might be a good option.

If it turns out the drive is cooked, replacements can be found pretty cheap. Depending on capacity, 15- 20 bucks might do it.

If you need someone to replace the drive, and you're not comfortable doing it, I'd be happy to help. I've gutted 'pods before.

Since it's a 5th gen, you might turn the boy onto RockBox, if you can get it running. It's a free third party firmware that completely replaces the Apple interface. It's prettier, and it uses UMS protocol. No Itunes needed, no DMR. Just drag 'n drop:thumbup: I use it myself, and I can't say enough good things about it.

This is slightly off topic, but in response to your reference to the RockBox software, it sounds pretty interesting. Too bad it doesn't seem to be compatible with the iPod Classic. I've got the original 160Gb model released in 2008(?) before they temporarily discontinued it and went with the 80 and 120Gb versions. I'm not sure why they did that, only to re-release the 160Gb version again last year.
Does this wipeout the original iTunes software forever or is there a way to reset it back to stock for warranty work, etc?

You can dual boot. Just toggle the hold switch after you first switch it on. The bootloader can be removed completely, so the short answer would be yes.

Unfortunately, it's not compatible with 6th gens. I modded a 6th gen faceplate to go on my 5.5, so now it has all the best qualities of a 6th gen, with RockBox to boot.

Ahh, too bad. I wouldn't have minded trying it out. I hate how iTunes lags and restricts what I want to do. I really should try out Media Monkey some time.

Thanks for the info though.
