5th Pocket Knives - How Useful Are They?

Hello knife lovers,

I suspect I am in the minority here, but I am a fan of the around-2-inches knives. I always have one on me, but it is in addition to my whatever 3 - 4 inches knife in my pocket. I find it very useful for small tasks and tight places, but also, a less “scary” knife if I had to use my knife in a not-friendly-place, and I don’t want to explain and argue. I always have a Victorinox MiniChamp in my key ring, but the satisfaction of using a good blade with a good steel is different with a small flipper in my 5th pocket.

Here are two of my favorites to show a few.

Do you use small knives? What do you use them for? Which are your favorites? Show us some photos.

My favorite "small" knife has always been a Swiss Army "Explorer." 1 - 2 3/8" blade, 1 - 1 1/2" blade and lots of other useful tools in a small pkg.

I own 5 of them stashed away in various places.

One is in the kitchen. One is in my day bag. One is in my travel kit. One is in my gun box. And one is in my tool box.

The only knives that I'll carry in my pocket are generally 3 1/2-4" in length. Currently that honor goes to a Spyderco Native Chief. If I need a "back up" knife, it would be a fixed blade boot/belt knife of similar length.

However, I do sometimes carry a Bastinelli Pika which only has a 1" blade but that's strictly a SD knife and not one for general use.

Outside of SAK's which are inarguably the most useful small knives of all, and the small traditionals that I carry purely for my own enjoyment; I also like to carry a fully serrated Spyderco Dragonfly daily because I appreciate the added utility of having the Spyderedge on me while still retaining the slicing ability of a full plain edge in my larger primary folder. I've even taken to swapping the SE blades into other versions. Or hell, idunno, maybe it's just an excuse to carry more knives ;)

My goodness! Your compact is beautiful! What are those scales and where did you get them from?

Thanks! I got them off an exclusive Spartan from SwissKnifeShop, and swapped them over. Actually, since they didn't have the slot for the pen in the Compact, I just used one side and on the other side I went with translucent blue. I then used the other marble scale on the opposite side of the Stayglow Climber in my second pic above (I hope I explained that all well). Anyhow, I actually quite dig the mismatched scale idea anyway, and I'm happy with the results on both knives.
