If you want to skip the story, my question starts at the second paragraph. A couple of months ago I bought a tacstar +5 extension for my 870. Thought it would be cool and couldn't really find anything about it on the web. Im not a tacticool ninja or anything just thought it would be cool to have something different. Anyway, I go to a local gun store and buy it. When I get home I put it on, load it up (9+1), and immediately notice how heavy it is. It was 11 pounds! The weight was in the front of the gun and came to the 26" mark of my 28" barrel. It was so heavy just standing on the skeet line with the gun shouldered for a couple of minutes made my shoulders and biceps ache. I'm no little frail dude either, I'm 5 11" and bench about 200lb. I just now decided that the bad out weighed the good and took the waste of money off the gun and put it in the closet.

I want to build a hd gun and decided to just build on my 870. I'm going to invest in a 18.5 inch barrel and a couple other things including a wilson combat +2 mag extension. Due to a prior incident, I'd like to know how much you're 6+1 870 weighs. I pointed out I was getting the wilson because they're supposed to be thicker than others. How does yours balance? I know it won't be as good as it is factory but does it make a huge difference? Thanks for your answers, I would ask a actual gun forum but I didn't want the hassle. Sorry if I shouldnt have posted this here. :)

Mine weighs 6.2 pounds empty, but its a 20 gauge express tactical ( 6+1, 18.5 inch barrel and synthetic furniture) . Your 12 gauge will weigh significantly less and balance much better with the shorter barrel and mag extension.

So what you saying is, with the configuration I have now (28" barrel, 4+1). If I put a 18.5" barrel and a +2 mag extension it should way less? With mine being a 12 and having the gun loaded would it still weigh less? If so that's very surprising.

IMO you'll get the best results with 4+1. I've tried different extensions and they all balance horribly. The stock 4+1 is just a lot more nimble from my experience.

I have an 18” with +2 and the balance is fine. Although if I had the extra loot I would get a ksg, 14 rnds and perfectly balanced.

Thanks for your help. I'm not gonna lie, I thought there would be more responses than 3. I guess there's not a gun sub forum for a reason! Lol. Really for those that helped thanks

To add some thing else, my go to HD weapon is a G17. I find it more practical to maneuver inside the house. Just something to think about.

Yes! I definitely agree! G17, 33 round mag and some good hollow points? I'll take it. I've actually thought this since I started thinking about my HD setup. Throw a light and some good night sights on it and I think you're doin pretty good lol. Sadly I don't have money for all that so my 870 will have to do. :/

Unless you have pissed off a drug cartel enough for them to send a para-military mercenary team for you 4+1 is enough for H.D. Being a lefty I have to have short barrels for an 870 made . 18 1/2 barrel and standard 4=1 balances a bout as close to perfect as you can get IMHO

Yeah I feel the same. It's much easier to maneuver and use a light with a pistol. But a shotty isn't too shabby. :D

That's how I think. I'll take a faster handling weapon over 2 more rounds any day. If you can't get it done in 4 you should probably use the plus one on yourself. You don't want to be the undead. :D

Sorry it took so long to reply, I kinda forgot about it! I don't think a cartel or a zombie horde are going to come after me (ok maybe in my gun fighting daydreams :) ) But I'm also not going to be shooting ducks with the extension on either. So I don't need the gun to balance absolutly perfectly. I just need to put some rounds down the way and I'd like to have more ammo than I need. Wouldn't a S&W revolver be more accurate than that glock? Especially if it had that extended mag in it. But the Smith isn't on your bed stand no matter how accurate it is. The glock is. I'll have the 28" in the closet if flying zombies arise. I just want to be ready for the symbolistic gang-banger and all of his friends. Since I live in a rural community and I can almost guarantee that every house around me has a gun loaded every night. The bad guys will know that. Whose to say they won't bring their own guns. There also won't be alot of swinging and what not of the gun in my home, so superb balance isn't really needed. Just my opinions and thought. Do with them what you will.

I went back and reread your O.P. I would prefer the 2 shot extention to the new remington 6+1 guns being sold because the new gun puts you in the same boat as us lefty's remington only makes the one barrel to fit it the gun I put together above is not a dedicated H.D. gun I put it together as a utilty gun It will serve H.D. as a woods roaming gun keep critters out of garden etc.
With the extention it isn't a big deal to switch back if you don't like it

It took me a while to realize what you wre talking about with left handed barrels lol. For all you standing around watching, none of you have any information on my O.P.? Buncha' freeloaders,I've seen the views :)

Yep I can buy right handed 18 1/2" barrels factory I had to have mine made if I knew what it weighed I would tell you. I can't tell you what mine weighs:D
I do know this I got my 870 tradin' I bought a C&R gun traded it for a different rifle traded that rifle for another rifle traded that rifle for a winchester 94 then they quit making the 94 traded it to a gunshop and drew boot for the lefty 870 new in the box :D
After barrel work sling swivels and sling I am still under $200 in the gun:thumbup:

Not sure on the weight, but it is manageable. For HD, set up your 870 with a Speedfeed MK IV-s pistol grip stock. It has a shorter LOP for tight spaces, has the best recoil pad on the market, and is solidly built at a good price. Friend of mine has one set up like this, with the factory +2 extension, a Wilson Combat/Scattergun Technologies jumbohead safety, an SBE precision aluminum follower, IC choke, XS Tritium front dot sight and ghost ring rear. The gun is accurate, light-kicking, smooth shooting, and AK-reliable. I would recommend avoiding the Wilson extensions, not a good idea to have a tube extension with nothing clamping it to the barrel for rigidity. Save a few bucks and stick with the factory extension tube, it is proven and has its own barrel clamp. Hope this helps! Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions on the 870, I love working on these guns, kinda the AR15 of the pump shotgun world.

Thanks for the recomendations, I already have the gun setup how I prefer it. I agree with just about everything you said except the part about the ak. Ak's are as reliable a 870. Don't get it backwards :) I always heard about how weak extensions are until I actually ran the above mentioned tacstar clamp less for about a month. Didn't storm a beach or anything but it did get handled alot and knocked around a little bit. Probably wasn't a good idea I know but it still shoots fine. Way I see it a shorter stouter made extension should work just fine :). The only reason I'm asking is i don't want to invest in a barrel and extension just to save 9 1/2" and 2lbs. Sadly I don't know any gun guys so I had to retreat to the forum for a experienced persons opinion. Sorta like knives. And everything else I'm interested in lol
